Thoughts about collecting and refurbing inkjets. Do you do it? Why? Why not? If you do, what is your process for testing and making ready? What prices do you charge? Do you offer new ink cartridges?  -- john gregory

We collect them, and make them available at no cost, and in an "as is" basis, to anyone that wants a computer. Since we give our computers to
schools, churches, and non profit agencies, we cannot afford to buy new ink cartridges.

We do not refurbish ink jet printers.  We can buy new ink jet printers with two cartridges for under $50.00 and furnish the USB printer cable for free.  We do not have to worry about warranty repairs.

Problems with ink jets include dirty or dry ink jet heads, paper feed problems often with the rollers needing servicing and furnishing new ink.  We can buy a new printer for close to the cost of two new ink cartridges and not worry about warranty repairs and labor.  If we would be doing it for environmental reasons, then it might make sense to refurb the higher end ink jets.  If it gets slow around the holidays, we may give it a try.

We used to turn away inkjets because of the cost of recycling (the
recycler we worked with charged $6-$10/printer), but we hooked up with
a local ink refilling place who provides us with a little black for
each printer. In turn we provide a sticker on the printer that tells
where the printer can be refilled. We test and sell the printer for
$5.00 with the stipulation that it's *as is* but that they can see the
black test page.

Does techsoup have or can they create a place for us to report numbers for everyone to see. - would love to see how you are all doing as refurbishers/recyclers. Though we are down from last years 6.5 million lbs reused/recycled because donations were down we were able to start demanufacturing more items like older printers and a/v equipment. I'd love to see how everyone else is doing in this economy and beyond. Both financial sucesses and reuse efforts.

Also. WITS will be purchashing a new trailer and our first tractor next year. This means we can buy most of your stuff from you if LTL and shipping will be much cheaper. So don't pay someone to take it.
Keep us in mind. Some items we cannot buy but will take to recycle safely.
Let us know if interested. What you have in lbs or pieces and your zip.
Thanks and Happy Holiday.

I feel sure you are looking for an XP Ghost with all of the drivers loaded.
Puppy Linux seems to be able to find its own drivers, and
http://helpingtulsa.org/images/puppy.htm has a bunch of ISO files for it,
that can generate a CD that does an automated install from cd; just press
enter a few times.

FYI To use Ghost legally, you have to buy a copy for every machine you put it on.

The folks who invented it still have rights to sell in volume... Something like $7ea copy
