Sorry for using this as a jobs board but Rob did start it with his call for beta testers!
I'm currently helping some people form a start-up. The start-up is developing a very innovative on-line news service which has now come out of concept phase and needs to be taking through to launch. The start up will be based in Edinburgh. More details on the concept and what we are looking for below.
Let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested.
Thanks!
Nigel
What we are doing
Anyone who has used sites like Digg or even Google News will recognise the way people are getting news is changing. Over the past year traffic to social news aggregators has rocketed by 300% (Newsvine) to 3,500% (Reddit) while news sites like New York Times are up around 10-15%. Readers want their news from multiple sources in one place, they want it better sorted and they want to comment on and interact with it.
What we are developing is a social news aggregation site. Elements of it are similar to Digg but as a whole it is a totally unique concept (partially based on experience developing betting exchanges). The site will provide a whole new way of interacting with news and the site in turn generates its own news out of user interactions. Initially the site will be US focussed as it is the bigger market. The primary revenue stream would be advertising however there are a number of other very significant revenue opportunities once the site reaches some scale.
What we are looking for
Currently the front end mock-ups are nearing completion; however we still have significant work to do on the algorithms. What we’re looking for is for 2-3 developers (maybe more) who can take the concept from mock-up to launch. It is a fairly sophisticated app (but no cash transactions) therefore requiring significant application development and database skills. Additionally it is going to need to be fairly slick on the front end (but very graphics light) so we’ll need some strong front end dev skills. The plan is to get to launch before seeking external investment (in order to avoid excessive dilution of equity).

Neither John or I have a problem with long-term members (such as Nigel
here and the Groopit fellows) posting job vacancies or
calls-for-testers to the list. So if anyone else has a glorious offer
up their sleeve, let us all know!
If anyone's thinking of posting something but is worried it might be
considered spam, you can always email John and me first to see what we
think. But as a general rule, if it's beneficial to Edinburgh- and
Scotland-based developers, this is the place for it.
