Blacks in Technology Meetup at SXSW Interactive on March 12

Diversity with inclusion is one of the elements that we have worked hard to promote at the SXSW Interactive Festival. From "Black Blogging Rockstars" to "Africa 3.0: A Look at the Future of a Connected Africa" to "How to Be Black", the SXSW Interactive 2010 lineup seeks to cover a wide variety of technological perspectives.

Come celebrate this diversity at the second annual Blacks in Technology Meetup from 6-9pm on Friday, March 12, at the Carver Museum and Cultural Center (1165 Angelina Street).

Hosted by Ogilvy, this event is open to new media professionals, as well as those who are hoping to break into this industry. In other words, no badge required to attend. Free refreshments!

If Refresh Austin doesn't have a problem with this sort of racially motivated self promotion then I am going to withdraw my membership.

I find this as offensive Mr. Webb as you would if I were to start and promote a group called "Whites in Technology Meetup" or "White Blogger Rockstars" or "How to be White - a Technology Guide to White Supremacy and Raising our Race in America."

Really Carl?  This is 2010 is this REALLY where we're at in our racial discrimination progress?  We've reached the point that this is supposed to be acceptable?  Why do you choose to discriminate when you don't want to be discriminated against?

I'm sorry, but I find your messages and your organizations only aimed at the Black population offensive.  I don't believe that Refresh should allow promotion of these types of groups.

Wow Matt, take a chill pill.

It's only offensive because you took it in that regard. Blacks in Technology isn't a black meetup. It's like women in technology, celebrating technology achieved as a woman. Our diverse melting pot. I can't explain it any more simple than that.

Discrimination is your behavior on how you handled the message.

That's all i'm going to say. No replies. No continuing this thread. Let's move on.

Well I must at least say this and then I will move on.

I do NOT discriminate.  In fact, my soul mate is black!  But anyone reading this knows as well as I do that if there was a group called Whites in Technology or any of the other groups I mentioned people in the Black community would be offended - and in my opinion rightfully so.

I get the whole thing about the indiscretions of the treatment of women and people of color in our country's history.  I just personally feel that we have made such great strides that things like this are a step in the wrong direction.

I don't need to take a chill pill - I just feel strongly about this and wanted to voice my opinion.  At the end of the day that is all it is - an opinion, and when all is said and done I'm sure my opinion doesn't mean much to the masses.  It is the collective opinions I worry about.

Anyway, as you say - let's move on.

This is a discussion to be had over beer.  Not email.

Matt, I'll be at the Refresh Austin lunch meetup today and will happily buy you (or anyone else) a pint if you'd like to chat about this more.

Thanks,
Mark

Agreed & I'll happily buy a pint as well. Mark is, as always, spot on.

Let's gear up & get busy with SXSW.

Cheers!

I WISH I had time for a brewsky at lunch today!  I'll definitely take a rain check, and I'll buy the 3rd round.

But no matter how drunk I get I will still always find things like BET, FUBU, and How to be Black offensive.  Maybe it's just me.  :)

Have a great time at lunch and a great SXSW!  We have ten major launches over the next two weeks, so we're missing out this year unfortunately.

I'm personally offended by groups like "Women in Film." I mean, come on. Next thing you know they'll be winning Oscars. I'm ready for my chill pill, er beer!

Yeah Art - write to the Academy and tell them they need to add Best Black Actor to their award list!  Apparently Oscar sees the difference in recognition based on gender rather than race even though some of you can't.

that sucks.

Hi Matt,

What racial progress are you referring to?  Part of the rational for the existence of a group like Blacks In Tech is the need to combat the lack of progress in new media technology.  It appears to me that Refresh Austin and SXSW are primarily geared towards white people and I find that offensive.  Am I the person of color in Refresh Austin?  I mean except for your soul-mate.

That response is hysterical.  "geared towards white people"???  You have shown your true "color" my friend.

I don't even need to respond further.

Matt,

So you ask people for their opinion and then you see no need to dialogue when you get an answer?  That is hysterical.

Sorry Carl - but I never asked for any opinion.  I was merely expressing mine.

I have just withdrawn my subscription to Refresh Austin, so I won't bother the group with my opinions further.

Matt,

When you wrote "Really Carl?" the question mark indicated that you had a question that you wanted answered.

Guess you've never heard of a rhetorical question - that must be a "white" thing.

Over - and out.

Alright all, we need to shut this thread down. While everyone is welcome and all of our opinions deserve respect, the driving purpose of Refresh Austin is to bring the professional Web community together in order to rise together. Race and politics don't fall into that circle and given feedback fro mmembers over the years, the community quite specifically doesn't want to stray into those arenas.

E-mail is a horrible method of communication when the topic is sensitive, so I hope we can all step back and realize that the emotions run high because both sides care about our community. I'd hate to see anyone leave Refresh Austin because of this thread or any other discussion on our list.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me off-list or in person. I'll be at South-by for the next few days and am more than happy to meet.

Thanks,

Alex Jones
