Summary: What's this job about?

Spiceworks, an Austin-based startup, is on the prowl for a web designer with HTML/CSS skills and a cutting-edge style. Are you someone who feels like a kid in a candy shop when you see snippets like “strategic design,” “progressive enhancement,” and “multivariate testing”? Are you a design guru who can mock-up creative concepts in a flash and craft the code to turn them into realities? As a web designer at Spiceworks, you’ll do just that as you build digital promos for Spiceworks and the powerhouse tech brands who advertise in our revolutionary app.

Called the “Facebook of IT,” Spiceworks is all the rage among more than 2 million IT pros across the globe who use our product to do their jobs and interact with each other to simplify “everything IT.” Top technology advertisers like Microsoft, Intel and Rackspace are clamoring to reach them by advertising in Spiceworks. We’re transforming the way that today’s tech products are managed, marketed and sold. And, given that we’re growing by 2,000 new users every day, it’s no wonder that Forbes coined Spiceworks “the future of media”!

We’re looking for a highly motivated web designer who can thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and work with an eclectic mix of personalities. You’re not someone content to just create 'pretty designs' and crank out HTML – you want to own projects through end-to-end: from initial design to browser debugging. You’re also a quick study who’s willing to tackle new challenges and ask the right questions. Oh, and a bit of wit and sarcasm certainly won’t hurt!

Responsibilities: What will I do?

As a member of our marketing team, you’ll be part of a creative squad that digests objectives and delivers the whole-shebang from creative-to-code!

  • Translate objectives into effective design – including web pages, interactive ads, microsites, HTML emails, print projects, and more
  • Mock up creative concepts in a design program like Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign
  • Write front-end code with HTML, CSS and Javascript (JQuery)
  • Concept, design and implement A/B and multivariate tests
  • Interface with internal clients – and personalities – from all departments in the company
  • Project manage multiple projects simultaneously (amid break-neck speeds!)
  • Coordinate with external vendors and see production of materials thru to delivery

Qualifications: What does it take to do this job?

Sure almost no one knows everything, but the more of these you’ve mastered – or at least know enough about to be dangerous – the more you’ll set yourself apart from the pack!

  • Solid design skills (and an online portfolio that showcases them)
  • Ability to hand-code valid, semantic markup (HTML and CSS)
  • Experience building interactive sites with Javascript (JQuery) and PHP, Ruby on Rails, or other web app frameworks
  • Belief that 'WYSIWYG editor' is a dirty word
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and other industry software packages
  • Experience creating infographics or other data visualizations
  • An understanding of Progressive Enhancement
  • Out-of-this-world project management skills
  • Killer communication skills across a wide spectrum of personalities
  • A strong work ethic
  • Agility. You can think on your feet and adapt well to a quickly changing environment
  • A/B and multivariate testing know-how
  • Command of copywriting basics
  • Exposure to or desire to learn Ruby on Rails
  • Involvement in mobile development projects is a plus
Think you've got what it takes? Toss your hat in the ring and be sure to include a link to your online portfolio.
