Subject: Immigration raids
Thanks Johan, for putting me onto this group.

Here's the update on the ICE raids, in which about 165
people were arrested at the DelMonte plant in N.
Portland yesterday.  Carol and I were both on site
shortly after the ICE vans arrived.  Interestingly,
there were a few indictments based on a conspiracy
between Del Monte and a contractor in Atlanta who
supplies Del Monte's labor force.  All were from the
contractor company, none from Del Monte.  UN
Ambassador John Bolton is, and George Bush's brother,
Marvin, was, on the Del Monte Board.  That's probably
coincidental, of course.

Another coincidence is that a local legal clinic had
filed charges against Del Monte for labor violations
related in particular to unsafe working petitions.

More raids are expected.

At any event, about 40 people showed up last night for
a New Sanctuary Meeting.  As of this moment, no
requests for shelter have been made.  Some financial
contributions have been made, but there is no
location, yet, to store material contributions.

We know that a number of children were "stranded" at
school.  I say stranded, because they could not be
released to anyone but their parents, and their
parents were detained.  We don't know how many, and,
presumably, many have been delivered to children's
services.  Confidentiality will preclude us from
learning the identities of such children.

Some small children were in day care; in a couple of
cases the caregivers don't even know the last names of
these children.  Parents are often reluctant to
divulge their surnames.

After the New Sanctuary Meeting, another meeting was
held by the Immigrants Rights Group.  There were about
300 people in attendance.  A subgroup met to address
concerns for children.  Several immigration lawyers
were present, and met one-on-one with concerned family
members of detainees.

peace and blessings
