"Abram was seventy-five years old when the Lord told him to leave
the city of Haran. He obeyed and left with his wife Sarai, his
nephew Lot, and all the possessions and slaves they had gotten while
in Haran." - Genesis 12:4-5a
Rich hated his job. He was a teacher. Everyday he would grumble
and complain about his work. He had lost the joy and the sense of
purpose that he once had. As I sat with him over coffee one day, I
asked him why he didn't get a new job or go back to school to
prepare for a different vocation. He replied that it was too late
to do that. Rich was 32 years old!
Beth had sold her house and had to get rid of most of her
furniture. She left her job and her friends. She felt the call to
something new for her life. She felt called into the ministry for a
purpose. It was part of God's plan for her life. Beth was 55 years
old!
Scott was very excited. With joyful anticipation he had been
planning on moving into the next years of his life. There was so
much out in front of him. There was a sense of freedom and exciting
opportunities. He made the change from one job (paid) to a new job
(volunteer) at a hospital, greeting and caring for people in need.
He loved it. He looked forward to it. His life had a new sense of
purpose. Scott had just "retired" at age 65.
Abraham and Sarah, Beth and Scott - all understood that God had
called them to a life of service. The same self-understanding
applies to you and me as servants of Jesus. God has a purpose for us
to live for every day. God presents us with opportunities and
challenges to participate in God's continuing creation and plan of
redemption.
Bringing It Home:
1. Are you stuck? Afraid to venture out? Unsure about your
future? Pray that God will open your eyes to the possibilities for
you to see how special and needed you are in a new role or place.
2. Are you at a crossroads of making a decision about your
present and future life? Ask those around you to help you learn
what your gifts are and what you are called to do. Remember, it is
never too late!
Prayer:
Lord, you are kind and gracious. Forgive me for not always
realizing my God-created potential and calling to do new things in
your name. Help me to value my life and my giftedness, so that I
can live to honor you by serving you and my fellow humans. Amen.
