PHP Could not open socket error

Installed in minutes; but 2 hours later I'm still getting:
"Could not open socket"
"Could not open socket"
Possibly something to do with hosting configuration? (supanames.co.uk
for this site)
Does anybody have any clues?

I also have a site on supanames.co.uk and got this problem. It is
caused by their firewall blocking the outward connection. You can
raise a request to have this lifted for a pecific site from your
control panel --> advanced -- firewall.

This was the correct answer for me.
I went into my control panel and allowed the Google server IP addresses.
