Whether I use WP-reCaptcha or Register Plus, it says "Could not open
socket" while trying to register to my blog. It registers just fine
with reCaptcha disabled.

Try disabling firewall in your server!
If it works you have to open a port 80 for sending and receiving data.
But enable firewall after wards!

Best Regards.

I'm not running my own server. Would this fix be for any reason other
than that?

Then you should ask your hosting company. They may close that port
because not everyone needs it open.

Tell them it's port 80 outbound. If they need a set of IP, there's a
list somewhere in the wiki (I'm on the phone right now).

If using PHP, check that allow_url_fopen in php.ini is on.

Hi. I've switched on allow_url_fopen in php5.ini (it was off) and
nothing happens (php5.ini because I'm running php5 in godaddy). Still
get "Could not open socket" (though redirecting to a friendlier
message at the moment).

Could you please let me know if I've done it right? My new php5.ini
looks like this:

register_globals = off
allow_url_fopen = on

expose_php = Off
max_input_time = 60
variables_order = "EGPCS"
extension_dir = ./
upload_tmp_dir = /tmp
precision = 12
SMTP = relay-hosting.secureserver.net
url_rewriter.tags =
"a=href,area=href,frame=src,input=src,form=,fieldset="

[Zend]
zend_extension=/usr/local/zo/ZendExtensionManager.so
zend_extension=/usr/local/zo/4_3/ZendOptimizer.so

Thanks!

Hello,

"Couldn't open socket" error, most of the time means that port 80 is blocked!

Best Regards.

Thanks.

That is the first question I asked the hosting company and they
checked it and said it was open. In fact, they said it was always
open.

Can I ask what hosting company you are using? Is it godaddy? I am
having the same issue and the problem is either godaddy is blocking
port 80 requests to google or google is blocking the godaddy
requests. Can anyone from google look into this? I am getting
absolutely nowhere with godaddy.

Yes. I am using godaddy and they have said that (quote):

"Port 80 has always been open on the hosting account so that shouldn't
be the issue."

They are still looking into it.

Could anyone of the reCaptcha team please look into this as well?

Desperate,

I would also like to add that now sometimes the forms DO get processed
correctly. Other times I am getting the "Could Not Open Socket" error,
and other times I am even getting a 500 Internal Server Error.
Currently I am redirecting users to a nicer message than just showing
the "Could Not Open Socket" error.

What causes reCaptcha to work sometimes and sometimes through a 500 or
socket error? No idea. Sometimes I can submit the same form 3 times in
a row. Others, it's mixed with one form correctly processed, then a
500 and then a socket or viceversa. Clueless.

I am getting this same error. The captcha would break and then I would
get the "Could not Open Socket" error.
To resolve it I tried to turn re-captcha off and turn it on again with
a different set of keys. IT worked for a few hours or even half a day
but then it would start breaking again.
I could repeat the process and the same thing would happen. I would
fix it in the evening and then half way through the day I would get
the error.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this or anything to try even?
Why would it keep stopping?

I would be willing to spend some time working with a re-captcha person
to try to replicate the issue so they can monitor the servers and
maybe I can check something happening on my end - it seems like a
weird issue that many people are having.

Hi,

Who is your hosting company? Can you point us to a URL of a page that
has the error?
