Is there any way to create custom color finishes by mixing
standard water-based finishes with artist pigments?

The goal being to come up with a stain or finish in
unusual colors like crimson, bright green, blue, purple,
etc.

Paint wouldn't work, since it would be opaque, which is
not the effect I'm seeking. I'd like the grain to show.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Klingspor's sanding catalog sells Woodburst wood stains that are available in
red, orange, yellow, blue, green, and violet. They also sell a pigment extender
that makes the stain more transparent. I have not ried them yet but they are
supposed to still shoe the grain like regular wood stain. BTW: they are $5 for
a 2 oz bottle.

Yes. You can use artists acrylics, Universal Tinting Colors (UTC's),
water-soluble aniline dyes, or pigments.

Dye produces a transparent film, the other three use suspended particles of
color so the result is muddier - more opaque.
Pigment colors are muted. Arcylics, UTC's and dyes can be very bright.

You can get pigments as 'Fresco Colors' from Woodworker's Supply (505)
821-0500 --- via mailorder

UTC's are available at good paint stores like Sherwin-Williams.

Arcylics you can get at hobby stores, like Hobby Lobby and Walmart.

'Transtints' metallized water-soluble aniline dyes - come from Homestead
Finishing Products 440-582-8929, and they have superior lightfastness
comapred to most aniline dyes.
