I just got an e-mail, wanting to know what my "favorite"
search engine is, as I seem to find a lot of stuff. I answered him,
then found out the return address was munged, so had to correct that,
then send again. I got it the first time, don't know if I would have
had the patience to train again.

Anyway, I thought I would pass along what I told him, in case
it will help someone else. And, remember, anything I can do in the way
of finding woodworking stuff on the web, anyone else can do the same
thing.

You guys are sooo funny. Some of the latest really good plans
I found were while using the search phrase "how to make a garage floor".
True. Actually I often start with Infoseek, which I consider a pretty
basic search engine. If I get nothing or little there I usually move to
ALL THE WEB, ALL THE TIME http://www.ussc.alltheweb.com/ and/or IXQUICK
METASEARCH http://www.ixquick.com/ And the WWA SEARCH ENGINES are
always worth checking out. http://www.woodworking2.org/index.htm When
nothing else does it, I go to DOGPILE http://www.dogpile.com/ Now I
do not consider Dogpile "better" than other meta-searches, I just like
it. Other people swear at Dogpile and swear by Northern Light,
Magellan, or some of the other meta-searches. I think they are all
good, just a matter of preference mostly. (I forgot to add this in the
post, but "Google" is used by Dogpile, so don't write and say I should
use "Googe".)

I think the most important thing tho is your search phrase.
Seemingly you have to "match" with something that is on the web. So it
pays to change it if you don't get results. Say you want a free
"treasure chest" plan. Start with "free threasure chest plans". Then
maybe "how to make a treasure chest", "make a treasure chest", "plans
for a treasure chest", and so on. To me that is more important than
changing search engines. But, of course, what you are looking for might
not be on the mets-search engines you are using, so it always pays to
try another meta-search after you have exhaused the possibilities of the
first. Just check to be sure you are checking a new engine or two, and
not all the same.

Might I add one?

I told my mother (perpetual internet newbie) to use Ask Jeeves www.ask.com,
and she couldn't be happier. It won't turn up hundreds of results, but some
good stuff usually comes up.

Don't forget

www.metacrawler.com

What it does is take your query and ask a bunch of other search engines,
then collect and collate the results.

I didn't include Ask Jeeves, because I am not satisfied with
using it or the results. So I didn't save it.

No. I have WebTV, not a computer, I cannot download it.

If you will check, it is probably somewhere in the list I
posted. If not, it is out of luck. Yes, I know, it does the same thing
other meta-searches do.

These are the last posts I am going to respond to in this
thread.

Go to your favourite search engine and type ** "search engine" list **
(excluding the **).

You'll find a bazillion to choose from. If you obtain this nice
little program (email h.ul...@gmx.at) you will be able to list them
as an ASCII file for future reference. Sorry, I don't have the URL,
but you could ask the author at the above email if you wish.

Dan.
