Today's Maui News Online has a front page article regarding the
restrictions to be placed on sindsurfing, surfing, kayaking, dive, and
etc. schools, limiting the number of students and instructors each
school can have working at one time. See
http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/520011.html?nav=10
While I believe that this makes some sense at small, limited access
parks, or fragile areas, it makes no sense at Kanaha. For instance, I
used to take my kids surfing at Cove Park in Kihei when they were
little, and I would have to stand between them and lots and lots of
tourist lessons, to intercept oncoming "surfers" before they ran my
little ones down. Also, for many years I used to go to Ahihi-Kinau
before sunrise when jet lag had me awake in the wee hours, and enjoyed
the soliturde until one year I was surprised to find it packed with
kayaks strewn all oveer the parking area, vans and people. I don't
believe that kind of traffic, and the way it was run, was apppropriate
for either area.
However, Kanaha is a huge park. The early morning windsurfing is
restricted to beginner lessons, and takes up one end of a very long
beach, with ample parking and access, and does not have a negative
impact on anyone. After 11:00, when the wind picks up, advanced
lessons start. These are mostly taken by visitors unused to the
strong conditions that Maui offers, and who need instruction to safely
increase their skills. They expect and depend on these lessons for
their enjoyment and safety. The lessons are a small fraction of the
overall windsurfing population at the park on a good day, and limiting
the number of students and instructors will not serve any practical
purpose.
Yes, there can be situations where the amount of commercial use needs
to be limited, but there is no one-size-fits-all-parks solution.
Imposing a "solution" where there is no problem, as at Kanaha, will
create a problem.
Please send a letter today to support the windsurfing schools.
Here are contacts from a previous Windsurfing Mag article:
county....@co.maui.hi.us
charmain...@co.maui.hi.us
mayors...@co.maui.hi.us
parks...@co.maui.hi.us
I will check for other addresses. By the way, I am in no way
affiliated with any windsurfing school or Maui business, I'm just one
of those windsurfing tourists who once found himself about a mile
downwind of launch and realized it was time for lessons.
