Want Hi-Fi VCR for audio only recording-who?

Thats right.Audio only.Would get a DAT, but I could throw in a PC
M to the VCR when I get the cash.
I would like to find out what the consensus is on the best VCR for
this purpose.
Would appreciate a price cap of about $400.
Please give particular models as examples, so I can go audition t
hem at the local appliance store(sigh).

P.S.- Would like one you dont have to include a video signal with
in order to function properly.

Remote is a must.

Also-is it possible to get one with record level adjustments, or
do you not need them with a VCR/
?

If you are willing to wait in 1992 you should see new S-VHS models
coming out with a new (digital) method of recording audio that
has been added to the S-VHS standard. There should be models from
Sharp and JVC (which is also rumored to have a SVHS VCR supporting a
16:9 screen ratio). They probably won't be released at $400
unfortunately.
