The RENTAL chart !!
-------------------
10 NEW ENTRY : The Road To Wellville (18)
Alan Parker's comedy about the man behind the most famous Cornflakes in the
world, Dr. Kellogg (Anthony Hopkins) and his (in)famous sex therapy clinic.
Also stars Matthew Broderick.
9 NEW ENTRY : Cops and Robbersons (PG)
8 (7) FALLER : It Could Happen To You (PG)
Originally titled, "Cop Gives Waitress $2million Tip", this one was released
at the cinema just in time for the start of the UK National Lottery last
November. Nicolas Cage can't afford a tip for waitress Bridget Fonda, and
promises her half his winnings if he strikes lucky. He wins a big prize :
4 million dollars to be exact, and his wife, Rosie Perez, is not happy about
the situation.
7 (5) FALLER : The Client (15, Warner)
Susan Sarandon plays lawyer to a young boy who witnesses a murder, and keeps
him protected from bad-guy lawyer Tommy Lee Jones (at least I think that's
how it goes. Not seen it myself) Directed by Joel Schumacher (Lost Boys,
Flatliners)
Another film adapted from a John Grisham novel following The Firm and The
Pelican Brief.
6 (6) NON-MOVER : Speed (15, Fox)
FBI agents Keanu Reeves and Jeff Daniels save a lift full of workers, in an
incredibly tense situation, and then get another call from the man with a crazy
plan, Dennis Hopper, who has rigged a bus to explode when the speed drops below
50MPH. Keanu gets hands-on experience on the bus, while Jeff co-ordinates things
from the office. Passenger Sandra Bullock ("Demolition Man") takes over the
wheel after the driver is shot, and as the bus approaches the impossible 50ft
gap in the middle of the freeway, tourist Alan Ruck ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off")
whinges "I shouldn't be here".
Nothing but action all the way, and some of the most amazing sound I've heard.
5 NEW ENTRY : Sirens (15)
Man-of-the-moment (in more ways than one) Hugh Grant gets away for the weekend
with wife Tara Fitzgerald to the home of a famous artist played by Sam Neill
who seems to spend all his spare time (and inbetween) painting portraits of
3 nude models including Elle MacPherson who had to put a bit of weight on for
the role. Not bad, but does drag after a while.
4 (4) NON-MOVER : Pulp Fiction (18, Buena Vista)
Tarantino's Oscar Winner for Best Original Screenplay has 3 stories woven
together. One is of two hitmen, one (John Travolta) who has to take his boss's
(Ving Rhames) wife (Uma Thurman) out for an evening, and both hitmen (Travolta
and Samuel L. Jackson) having to take care of their boss's briefcase and the two
guys who stole it (one of them being Frank Whaley).
The second is of a young couple (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer) who hold up a
diner, and the third is of a boxer (Bruce Willis proving he can act when he
puts his mind to it) about to have his final fight and then come home to the
woman he loves (Maria De Medieros) before embarking on a search for his father's
watch of which wouldn't be fair to detail the incredible story here.
The only 'cut' I know of is not a cut time-wise, but goes like this:
When John Travolta shoots up in Eric Stoltz's place, in the cinema version
you see the needle pierce the skin of Travolta's arm. In the video, it is P&S
so the actual piercing has been P&S'd off the screen because the BBFC did not
want us to see such a thing.
As to the possibility of a widescreen version being released, I see two
problems :
A) The film is released through Buena Vista Home Video who, to date, have not
released any WS videos in the UK, and told me there were no plans for such
a version when I wrote to them in early 95. Perhaps they'll change their
minds one day. However, there is another problem :
B) Since the BBFC don't want us to see the needle piercing the skin, that
part of the film would either have to be cut or P&S'd so we don't see it.
What nice people, eh?
The question still remains though : Just what is it in the briefcase?
3 (3) NON-MOVER : Forrest Gump (12, CIC)
The film that scooped the most Oscars this year, including Best Film, Actor
(Tom Hanks, again) and Director (Robert Zemeckis), is a simple but engaging
tale of a man who does all the right things in life, doesn't always say the
right things, but gets to meet the right people, and be in the right place
at the right time. If you haven't seen it yet, I won't say anything to spoil
it, but I once saw a few articles in rec.arts.movies referring to the fate of
one particular character by putting what happened to them in the subject
header with NO spoiler!
Still, that was only part of it. As a whole I was expecting a good film, esp.
after all the hype, but it was (dare I say it) a masterpiece, and I'd like to
have seen it come 2nd behind Pulp Fiction at the Oscars.
Since it was directed by Robert Zemeckis, I spotted one thing in a scene where
Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise are going across a busy road, a car stops right in
front of them almost hitting them, and Sinise bangs on the bonnet of that car
saying "I'm walking here, I'm walking !"
which... is exactly what Michael J Fox said in Back TTF 2 as Marty Jnr when
the same thing happened in his town square. I'm sure I saw another film made
before the BTTF's where this quote originated but I forget which one it is now.
Maybe I watch too many films :)
2 (2) NON-MOVER : Reservoir Dogs (18) - WS PAL LD (released June 14th, 24.99)
Reservoir Dogs...here at last...and it's reportedly uncut with respect to the
cinema release. If anyone's seen it yet can you tell me if this is correct?
For those who don't know what it's about (you must've been hiding under a rock
for the last three years :), it's the story of 6 men hired to do a raid on
a jewellery store : Mr. White (Harvey Keitel), Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen),
Mr. Brown (Quentin Tarantino, director of the film itself), Mr. Pink (Steve
Buscemi), Mr. Blue (Eddie Bunker) and Mr. Orange (Tim Roth).
The big man in charge of the operation is known only as Joe (Lawrence Tierney),
and he has a helping hand from his son, 'Nice Guy Eddie' (Chris Penn).
But...things don't quite go according to plan. The cops arrive on the scene
and cause trouble for our 6, so they try and make it back to the warehouse
to work out what to do next, but as the cops arrived way too quickly, someone
must've tipped them off. The question is...who's the rat in the house?
I'd recommend this one most of all to those people who reckon it's the most
violent film in the world..and haven't yet seen it! Now it's out for you
to try. SEE IT NOW!!
As for a widescreen video version, such is as yet unknown, but if it's just a
regular fullscreen version, then this won't be such a problem for the following
reason. The film was filmed with the "Super 35" process in which a 1.33:1 image
(same ratio as a TV set) is filmed, and the picture is masked to give a 2.35:1
image.
For special-effects films which have been shot with Super 35, (eg. True Lies,
The Abyss, and Terminator 2) the special-effects sequences are shot at a ratio
close to the intended cinema ratio, so they will have to be P&S'd for the
non-widescreen video.
As Reservoir Dogs isn't a special-effects film, on the non-widescreen video
there will be more picture top and bottom, but sometimes you will lose some
picture at the sides. The reason for this is because there may be something
in the 1.33:1 filmed image that the director did not want to keep, such as
boom mikes getting in shot by accident.
People have different opinions about whether they prefer the widescreen or
regular version with a film shot with the "Super 35" process.
The widescreen version will always be the way the director originally intended
though. (*)
(*) Except for director James Cameron, who for some reason prefers his
fullscreen version of "The Abyss" to the widescreen one.
1 (1) NON-MOVER: The Specialist (18, Warner)
Sylvester Stallone is Ray Quick, an explosives expert who works undercover
as a sort-of hitman to bump off those people that he's paid to kill by whoever
asks him. One day he gets a phone call from Sharon Stone, whose parents were
murdered by Eric Roberts when she was a kid. She wants him dead, but will he
take the job? Of course he does, and they end up in bed together and also in
the shower. Also involved in the film is one of my favourite actors,
James Woods who isn't exactly pushing his talents to the limit with this film
but he still turns in one of his usual, excellent uptight performances.
The cinema certificate was 15, but the BBFC have up-rated it to an 18 for
video for two counts of violence (and I don't know what those are) and a
lengthy bout of groin-soaping in the shower scene.
The RETAIL Chart :
------------------
In this week's chart there are 10 new entries, 5 going up,
3 staying still, leaving 22 going down.
40 NEW ENTRY : Arabian Nights
39 (24) FALLER : Manchester United - Season Review 94/95
38 (18) FALLER : Leeds United - Season Review 94/95
37 (29) FALLER : Ed Wood - Look Back In Angora
The world's most famous director noted for being into cross-dressing,
Angora sweaters and making some of the worst films ever made, is now
celebrated in this documentary. He even won the Golden Turkey Award for Worst
Director and Worst Movie ("Plan 9 From Outer Space").
36 NEW ENTRY : Isle of Man TT '95
35 (33) FALLER : Matt Le Tissier - Unbelievable
34 (19) FALLER : E.R. - The Beginning (12, 10.99)
The US 4 series (currently showing on Channel 4) starring Anthony Edwards
gets the 84-minute pilot episode released onto video.
33 (39) CLIMBER : Kalifornia (18, 10.99, Columbia TriStar)
Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis star as a serial killer and his girl, who get
a lift from David Duchovny (X-Files) and Michelle Forbes (Star Trek Next
Generation), but the trip doesn't go quite the way they planned, as the killings
continue.
Why "Kalifornia"? It was the working title, and they stuck with it.
32 (20) FALLER : Crocodile Shoes - Volumes 1, 2 & 3 (15)
The complete series on 3 cassettes of Jimmy Nail's recent BBC TV series.
31 (26) FALLER : The X-Files : Pilot/Episode 1 (PG, 10.99)
FBI agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) in the first
video releases of the cult-TV show in which they investigate the paranormal.
The episode titles are "Pilot" and "Deep Throat".
30 (28) FALLER : Patlabor - Mobile Police (PG, Manga)
29 (25) FALLER : Liverpool - Season Review 94/95
28 NEW ENTRY : The Avengers - Cathy Gale : Volumes 1 & 2
27 (16) FALLER : Rik Mayall - Out Of My Head (18, 12.99)
A new video from Rik Mayall all about drugs, which includes interviews with
some drug-users.
26 (15) FALLER : The World of Lee Evans (PG, 12.99)
The up-and-coming comedian now has a series on Channel 4 which is a series of
15 or 30-minute comedy sketches, and shows on Fridays at 9pm. Excellent stuff,
and I just missed tonight's episode :(
25 (22) FALLER : The Life Of Brian (10.99, CIC)
The best of the Monty Python films (IMHO), with the late Graham Chapman as
Brian who, as the Jesus of the film, ends up on the crucifix, as do many others
and it's then that they all sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life".
If you're strongly religious, this might not be your cup of tea. To everyone
else, go and get it for a bloody good laugh!
24 (11) FALLER : The Last Seduction (18, 10.99, ITC)
23 (4) FALLER : The X-Files second Boxset (15, 21.99)
Contains "File 3" and "File 4".
Episodes contained are : Jersey Devil, Shadows, Ghost in the Machine and Ice.
22 (30) CLIMBER : The Crow (18, 14.99, Entertainment)
Brandon Lee in his last film, following an accident on the set with a gun
which killed him, playing a comic character who is actually dead in the first
place so full marks there for method acting. Not all of the film had been
completed when the tragic event occurred, so some scenes were tweaked in order
to fit the storyline. For example, one shot of Brandon shivering while walking
down a raining alleyway, was transferred to having him walking through a door
into an apartment with a leaking roof.
21 NEW ENTRY : Alan Shearer - Shear Magic
20 (14) FALLER : Suede - Introducing The Band
19 (23) CLIMBER : Hoop Dreams (15)
A 3-hr documentary-film about basketball which got excellent reviews on its
cinema release just a few months ago, but I haven't seen it myself.
18 (13) FALLER : Red Dwarf 6 : Byte 2 - "Polymorph II : Emohawk"
(PG, 12.99, BBC Video)
The last 3 episodes of the sixth series containing "Polymorph II : Emohawk",
"Rimmerworld", and "Out of Time".
17 (17) NON-MOVER : Pinocchio (U, 15.99, Disney)
Another golden oldie released onto video for the first time, and like the rest
will sell shedloads of tapes.
16 NEW ENTRY : The Harder They Come (15)
15 (6) FALLER : Star Trek DS9 Vol. 3.7 (10.99, CIC)
14 (8) FALLER : The X-Files File 4 : Ghost in the Machine/Ice (15, 10.99, Fox)
13 (7) FALLER : The X-Files File 3 : Jersey Devil/Shadows (12, 10.99, Fox)
12 (12) NON-MOVER : The Ultimate Fighting Championships 2 (18, 14.99)
Controversy abound ever since the BBFC passed this one which is just nothing
but mindless violence with blood spurting, bones crushing and other things
best left to the imagination. How could the BBFC pass this when they've been
sitting on Reservoir Dogs for so long (which is released to rent on June 14th)
Shame on you Mr. Ferman :)
11 NEW ENTRY : The Getaway (18, 14.99, Warner)
A remake of the 1972 film with husband-and-wife Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger
replacing Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, and Roger Donaldson taking over the
directorial reins from Sam Peckinpah. 'Doc' (Alec Baldwin) plans one last
'getaway' with Kim and Michael Madsen (Cody) before going straight, but gets
caught and tells Kim to seek the help of James Woods (Jack Benyon)...but things
turn bad, friends turn traitors, and can Alec and Kim escape with all the loot
at the end?
Before seeing this, I heard that they'd planned to make the film in a different
way than the original, but on seeing the original after this one, it seemed
like a scene-for-scene remake most of the way through up until the end, save
for a bit of inflation.
Also stars the babelicious Jennifer Tilly.
10 NEW ENTRY : Brookside - The Teenagers (PG)
A few months ago, a video "Brookside - The Women" was released which featured
all the middle-aged brigade sitting about and talking about the series and
what their characters had been through. Now it's the turn of the teenagers,
hence the title.
9 (5) FALLER : Jaws (PG, 10.99 P&S, 12.99 WS, CIC)
One of my favourite films of all-time now digitally remastered in both
P&S and WS. Directed by Spielberg and starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and
Richard Dreyfuss, this is one film that is best in WS, but is also worth a
look in P&S for all those in-yer-face shark moments. :)
This was rumoured as being released with a new stereo/surround soundtrack as
opposed to the mono soundtrack the original P&S and WS releases had which is
how it was originally made. This is now known to be not the case, but how can
anyone refuse a video like this? :)
The previous releases had the sound credit "Hifi", but were actually "Hifi-mono"
The new release also says "Hifi", but should now be "Hifi-stereo". It doesn't
say "Dolby Surround", so I don't know if someone's made a mistake somewhere...
8 (10) CLIMBER : Schindler's List (15, 14.99 P&S, CIC; 34.99 WS PAL LD, Pioneer)
There can't be many people who haven't heard of Steven Spielberg's true story
of the life of Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party, a womaniser, and
war profiteer who saved the lives of over 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust,
and all played by Liam Neeson.
The film won 7 Oscars last year including Best Picture and Best Director, and
was announced by CIC Video as being also released in widescreen format for the
rental market (which might have happened but I haven't seen it around - if
you've seen it, please tell me), and the retail market. Well, the film has
been released, but in P&S only. Anyone know when a widescreen one will be
released? CIC have no listing for any such tape being released in 1995.
7 (9) CLIMBER : Pink Floyd - Pulse (19.99)
The 150 minute concert filmed at Earls Court last year on 20th October
featuring classic hits such as "Shine on You Crazy Diamon", "Wish You Were Here"
"High Hopes", and the first filmed performance of "Dark Side of the Moon"
in its entirety. An absolute must!
6 (3) FALLER : True Romance (18, 14.99 P&S, Warner)
Written by Quentin "Reservoir Dogs" Tarantino, directed by Tony "Last Boy
Scout" Scott, and stars Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper,
Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, and Bronson Pinchot.
Christian Slater plays Clarence Worley, a loner who works in a comic book store
and is out on his birthday night watching a triple-feature of Sonny Cheba movies
at the local fleapit. Patricia Arquette (Alabama), a call-girl, walks into his
life by tipping popcorn all over him. They get married, go after her pimp,
Drexyl (Gary Oldman), steal his drugs and visit Clarence's Dad (Dennis Hopper).
They're in big trouble, and are being followed by the mafia led by Christopher
Walken. However, help for Clarence comes in the form of his hero, Elvis (Val
Kilmer) who gives him advice...and a gun.
This version is meant to be the same as the UK cinema release, hence the
billing on the front of the box "Original Cinema Version", but when it came
out for rent it was listed as "Uncut Version" which is misleading as the
NTSC Laserdisc version is the "Unrated Director's Cut", which is also in
widescreen, but I can't afford an LD player however much I'd like one :)
5 NEW ENTRY : R.E.M. - Parallel
11 of R.E.M.'s best videos including 'Man on the Moon', 'Sidewinder Sleeps
Tonite' and 'Everybody Hurts', along with excerpts from short films by
various directors that will be featured by the band on tour in July.
4 NEW ENTRY : Star Trek DS9 Vol 3.8
3 (1) FALLER : Michael Jackson - HIStory : Video Greatest Hits
The biggest star in pop, with the biggest number of court allegations against
him has released a double album containing 15 remastered hits, plus 15 new
tracks on 2 CDs, and numerous tapes and LPs :)
150 mins in total. Don't know how many are on the tape yet though.
2 (2) NON-MOVER : Riverdance - The Show (12.99)
1 NEW ENTRY : Star Trek Voyager Vol 1.1 : The Caretaker
Videos that dropped out this week :
-----------------------------------
40 (17) Monty Python's Flying Circus - Series 4 Vols.1 & 2 (12.99 each)
38 (28) The X-Files : Episodes 2 & 3 (12, 10.99)
FBI agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) in the first
video releases of the cult-TV show in which they investigate the paranormal.
The episode titles are "Squeeze" and "Conduit"
37 (37) The Bob Marley Collection - Legend
36 (32) Naked Gun 33 1/3 - The Final Insult
(12, 13.99 video, CIC, 17.99 CDi; 24.99 WS PAL LD)
Leslie Nielsen is back as Lt. Frank Drebin for a 3rd film of complete
sillyness, with Fred Ward as the mad Rocco to provide a plot. Also, Frank
has decided to leave the police force and set up home with his love Jane
(Priscilla Presley), and try not to fall under the amorous glances of
Anna Nicole Smith.
35 (35) Sharpe's Gold (12.99)
34 (56) Tottenham Hotspur - Season Review 94/95
32 (19) The Best of Rab C Nesbitt (15)
31 (26) On The Waterfront - Restored Columbia Classic (PG, 12.99)
27 (27) The Wild One - Restored Columbia Classic (PG, 12.99)
Two of the great classics of all-time from Brando now digitally remastered,
and Brando won a Best Actor Oscar for "On The Waterfront", stamping his mark
as the 'angry young man of his generation'.

Well, that's it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mail
me at "charts-...@festive.demon.co.uk" to tell me.
Otherwise, read it on rec.music.misc, and read the video version on
rec.video.releases and alt.video.laserdisc. Read both on uk.misc too!
If you didn't see the votes for Best of 94, just ask and I'll mail them to you.
Also, if you have any questions about CDs, videos, tapes or LPs you're after
please send an enquiry to me at PastelBlue : "d...@pastel.demon.co.uk".
If it's available we'll be able to get it.
Plus, read my monthly video/CD chart mumblings on PastelBlue, by sending
a message to "sea...@pastel.demon.co.uk" with the following line in the
message (with no quotes) :
"send monthly-news"
Also, for more info on PastelBlue, include the line :
"send help"
