Here I go, again... All (that was important to me - the scene
splitting function still didn't work well, but HDVSplit took care
of that) seemed well with Sony Vegas Pro 8 with the new
(beta) .dll installed (no more red/black frames or crashes), but
I just tried saving five .m2t files as a single file (from one drive
to another, no recompression needed anywhere) using two
combinations of drives and four times I got a Windows
"vegas80.exe fault, program must close" message at 55%
completion (at 19 1/4 minutes) of the save of the 35 minute
video. This nonsense kinda makes me just want to throw the
whole works in the lake. I guess I will need to reinstall Ulead
VideoStudio to complete this project - and this is getting
quite ridiculous!

>David,

Unlike much (if not most of) the video editing software I own and use, Vegas
8 Pro is substantially supported by their developer, Sony, and their team in
Madison Wisconsin is absolutely first rate. The forum they provide also has
tons of experienced users.

Just as I previously suggested when the red/black frame issue had you "at
your wit's end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", might I again suggest that you contact Sony
directly as a registered owner seeking support as well as post a request for
help in their forum. In my nearly 5 years of HDV editing with Vegas, I have
contacted them several times, and also posed Canon HV20 compatibility issues
to them, all of which they handled promptly and cheerfully. It is my opinion
that they are extremely anxious to have a product which works well, and do
what they can to provide adequate support. Unlike Ulead, Cyberlink, Nero,
and Pinnacle, all of whom provide crappy off-shore support, you should be
able to get some relief here.

Good luck!

Thanks. I had already posted the above on the Vegas forum,
and added my computer info to my Sony account - but a direct
Sony contact is also a good idea. Sometimes, though, it is just
easier to use workarounds, especially if they are convenient to
use and reliable, like HDVSplit (and likely VideoStudio, at this
point...), rather than to try continually to debug buggy software...

I agree David that splicing together 5 .m2t files is not a major deal, and
programs like VideoRedo and the Ulead programs should be able to do that
with no sweat. On the other hand, a program as elaborate as Vegas should
ALSO be able to handle such a trivial task without getting such a drastic
"program must close" abort. Hopefully Sony will find and fix that one
quickly!!

A good workaround does indeed make the most sense if you just want to get
the workflow accomplished. I personally would use VideoRedo for the job...
