DSR-1500(a) remote via AGA-850

controlled by a Panasonic AG-A850 controller. The UVWs work fine,
however when playing back from the DSR-1500s, the display on the
controller and on the video monitors seems to randomly switch between
time code and counter display. We are only using the decks for
playback and we do not use time code display. I am wondering if it is
a setting in the remote or an incompatibillity.
Has anyone come across this issue before? Can it be correct by a
setting on the remote or the deck.

I would bet it's a difference in the comm protocol of the different
manufacturers. Can you just force it to Counter display?

The only thing we can seem to do is as soon as it goes from counter to
time code count, there is a 'counter select' button on the remote that
we press that can toggle between the 2. just very annoying that it
does it. problem is it seems to be random. Could go days without
having it happen once, to have it happen 10 times in an hour.

This doesn't act like a software glitch. Maybe look at that button on the
remote; could it be faulty? Is there a similar switch on the unit? Could
it be wonky?

Considering the randomness:
If I was still doing bench work I would check the quality & level of the TC.
If the level is too low or too distorted, the PB deck or controller might
default to counter since the TC seems bad.
Not sure how you would diagnose it though. On analog devices you could scope
the out put of the CT head or the output of the pre-amp fro it. I presume TC is
built-in to the digital signal, or is there still a separate TC track on digi
devices?

Are there any other protocols available from the remote? BVW and DSR may
