i have, i have. there are so many out there that i have no idea how to
differentiate one from another. yes, i could download trials of them
all, but life's too short for that ;-)
i was hoping ssomebody had trod the path before me....

In my situation, it wasn't just the conversion of .swf files to
uncompressed .avi files, it was also the conversion of .flv files to
uncompressed .avi files.
Like you, I searched Google and got a zillion hits. I tried trial
versions of numerous programs and get widely varying results.
Basically, what I found was that some programs would convert some
files fine but not other files.
What I finally did was getting several programs and adding them to my
"video toolkit arsenal" so that I would be more or less prepared to
convert almost anything that came my way. I can't even give you the
names of all of these programs; in fact, several of them have very
similar names.
My best suggestion to you is that if you're lucky and all of the files
that you need to convert come from the same source, you may just find
a single program that will perfectly convert them all. Else, you may
end up like me with a half-dozen new applications on your system.
Good luck, and sorry that I couldn't offer more specific advice, but
especially when it comes to .flv files, with MP3 audio, Nelly Moser
audio, Spark video, On2 VP6 video, etc., the number of variations
seems too great for any one program to properly handle. Even with just
plain old .swf files, there appear to be some variations due to the
specific software that was used to create the file. These days, there
are many applications besides the Adobe/Macromedia Flash products that
are capable of creating .swf files.
The above was my experience about six or eight months ago when I went
through all of this. Perhaps things have improved since. I don't know
because I haven't revisited the situation.
As a starting point, I would suggest that you try the free trial of
Total Video Converter.

my main problem is getting some really cute text output from a couple of
swf text generators into vegas 7. apparently 7 doesn't recognise any swf
after ver 4. i like some of the ffects in textosterone, which thankfully
puts out an uncompressed mov file as well as swf. but more often than
not, they usually put out swf 5 and upwards. i've got winavi (works, but
is a bit of a toy with it's gui), and i tried amor, which did an awful
job, but then again, it could have been my impatience not reading the
i/o details.
i'll stick with mov from textosterone for the moment, the only downside
is that the text isn't well antialised so i have to use a little blur in
vegas....
