I would also be very interested in trying that cif file.  Could some
generous person post this on a website somewhere?  I was all set to
try SVCD on Sunday, and then Nero slipped their delivery date :(  If I
had your cif file, I could at least test my DVD player to see if it
supports SVCD.  Thanks!

I finally finished creating a non-standard VCD last night that holds 9
music videos.  The videos are encoded at approximately double (2200
kbps) the standard VCD bit rate.  My DVD player plays it, and the
quality is up to VHS standards - much nicer than standard VCD.  My
guess is that SVCD will look even nicer.

You may apply to get free 50mb spaces and put it on as share drive. I'd try
to burn *.cif, too.

Apply, goto www.freedrive.com

Let us know when *cif file available for download.

Progressive scan video and panasonic mpeg encoder

No. But with progressive source material, you should be encoding
both fields, anyway.

> My reasoning is that if I selected odd or even, the encoder

No, it does not work this way. Your DV video is originally
either 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC). In order to store
it in VCD compliant format, the Panasonic MPEG-1 Encoder
has to scale the source material to 352x288 (PAL) or
352x480 (NTSC) before offering to the actual encoder
part.

Now, the scaling can be done in many ways. If you choose
to deinterlace by discarding odd or even fields, it will
do the vertical scaling by  simply throwing away every
other line. But there is no need to deinterlace, as your
footage wasn't interlaced in the first place.

Throwing away information is not good at all - you will get
better results when you choose both fields (and high quality
resampling) as the program will then interpolate the odd and
even lines together, retaining all the informationg there
was to be extracted from the original image.

Video resolution is a complicated issue. Suggested reading:

 <http://www.elitevideo.com/new2.htm>
 <http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/TVBROADCAST/ovrsamp.htm>
 <http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/TVBROADCAST/convrg1.htm>

In short, by using both fields you will get the oversampling
benefits and also avoid unnecessary aliasing artifacts.

Note that as youre using 720 pixels wide source, you should
also crop 8 pixels from the left and right side of the original
image before scaling to 352 pixels wide image. Otherwise,
the aspect ratio will be slightly off. (Simply use Panasonic's
"Crop Processing" function - put the mark to "Cut image" and
adjust left and right border by 8 pixels each.)

Huffyuv 1.1 - lossless Win32 video codec

I've written a utility called "Huffyuv" which may be useful to readers of
this group.  It's a lossless codec for VfW which is designed to replace
uncompressed YUY2 as a capture format.  Compression is typically around 2:1,
and it's fast enough to run in real time during video capture.  The new
version 1.1 also supports compression of RGB data, so Huffyuv can be used to
compress the output of programs like VirtualDub.

Huffyuv is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL, and
full source code is available.

The home page is:

Does the DVsoft CODEC appear in your Premiere project compressor choices?

Thanks guys....you are right..I only have it on DV
so it must be coming from the cam.

I was thinking that somehow the cables going from
the camera to the DV -RAPTOR were somehow picking
up the sound via the soundcard... or
something...HUmmm
What does the sound cables do when capturing...
Do I need them conected at all?

Is the video and audio totally contained within
the DV cable?

Maybe I will try removing the audio cables when
capturing.

Thanks again

It most likely is the cam, just don't know the
best way to remove it.

I asked much the same question a couple of days ago, and got a very thorough
answer.  Bottom line however was - you are not going to get photo quality
snapshots with any of these videocameras.  As was pointed out to me, you
need roughly 1024x768 to get photo qual 5x7 pics, and even more for 8x10.
These camera's resolution falls far short.  If you want printable qual
photos - buy a digital still frame camera.  The camcorder may take snaps
good enough to email friends, or put on the web, but thats about it.

As for the memory stick, I dont think it has anything to do with the
quality.  It may allow you to take a photo snap while simultaneously
shooting video, which you couldnt do without the stick (although I am not
100% sure on that one). It also gives you an option to get it into the PC.

correct me if I have gotten this wrong gurus.
