I created my first SVCD last night. It was just a 2 minute video
clip and it only took me 1 ½ hours to created it from start to finish..
The quality was excellent. A lot better than VCD but not quite as good
as DVD. However I could see vertical lines in the picture if I looked
close. (I played in on my Apex dvd player)
Here is how I created it:
1.Captured 2 minutes .avi uncompressed.
2.Used bbMPEG to convert to SVCD format 480X480. (I was basically
following the directions at
http://saturn.spaceports.com/%7Edvdsoft/svcd/foolproof.htm Converting
to the SVCD format took about 25 minutes for 2 minutes of Video! My
system is Athlon 700 so I was surprised it took that long.
3. I used I-author deluxe to author the cd and make the .cif file
so I could burn it with EZCD.
My conclusions….
Quality is nice but I will be waiting to create more SVCDs until I have
the following
1. Video Capture board that can capture SVCD compliant MPEG2 files
on the fly (Using hardware compression)
2. Video Editing software that retains the SVCD format.
Does anyone know if there these 2 things exist?

Heyday,
how big is that .cif file? I am looking for a way to burn a test SVCD
myself but don't have I-author. Could you possibly email the .cif file to
me?

I guess they are not targeting home users though.......

(S)VCD software makers like to differentiate their products so
that you've got a "professional" version (which supports all
the gimmicks defined in the spec) and a dumbed-down "consumer"
version which only has very limited capabilities.
The problem is that more and more consumers are willing to
use the advanced features now. Those dumbed-down versions
simply are not enough anymore.
The bottom drops out from the "professional" VCD authoring
software market as soon as somebody creates an affordable
(or even free!) program that supports all the bells and
whistles of the (S)VCD standard. Some people are already
working on such projects...

Yes, I too think the $2000 that Enreach wants is an obscene price. Yes,
they invite piracy at that price. At $100 or less, almost everyone would
buy it...

I finally finished creating a non-standard VCD last night that holds 9
music videos. The videos are encoded at approximately double (2200
kbps) the standard VCD bit rate. My DVD player plays it, and the
quality is up to VHS standards - much nicer than standard VCD. My
guess is that SVCD will look even nicer.

What kind of DVD player do you have? It would be great to get a
list of DVD players than handle handle high-bitrate VCDs and/or
SVCDs.
I have an old dual-laser Sony S300. Anyone know what it does
with these formats? It plays standard VCDs, including CDRs, just
fine.

As for the SVCD support, check out
<http://www.iki.fi/znark/video/svcd/overview/#related_links>.
The list is by no means very comprehensive, but still better
than nothing.

I have a Pioneer DV-C302D. It also plays SVCD, but it appears to
squish still pictures sometimes (about half the time - it's random).
Maybe that's why they don't claim support for SVCD in the Pioneer
manual.
It's interesting to note that the nonstandard VCDs at 2200 kbps
(mpeg1) appear much cleaner than the SVCD I tested (which is supposed
to be higher variable-bitrate mpeg2). Any ideas why this would be?
Is Ligos just not that good at encoding 480x480? Is it a progressive
vs. interlaced issue?
John
More welcome...
I'm a rookie with SVCD and know just a little about it.
