There are some types of content that benefit from 3D, but most cannot.
There are some unavoidable reasons for this. In real life, 3D vision is an
extreme short-range phenomenon that helps us climb down stairs and grab things
within arm's reach. The 3D perception fades very rapidly with distance, and is
scarcely perceivable at distances of 30 meters or so or beyond. This means
that most action in most films doesn't really benefit at all from 3D, since it
would not be clearly perceived as 3D even in real life.
There has been some research done showing that 3D perception adds almost
nothing to the total information content of an image. It's a lot of trouble to
go to for something that really offers no clear advantage or added value. This
is one reason why 3D fails again and again.
Other reasons are physiological and technical. It's hard to find a truly
convenient, effective way to present two completely different images to each
eye. Most of the methods involve using glasses, and all of them have defects
that can cause eyestrain or even motion sickness.
For example, in real life, when you focus on things at different distances
from your eyes, your brain automatically adjusts the convergence of your
visual axes to match the estimated distance. With 3D projections, though, the
focus distance is always the same, even though the eyes must continually
realign their axes for proper convergence. Human brains are not used to this
and it can cause severe eyestrain over time, as well as double vision,
headaches, nausea, motion sickness, and so on. Of course, in theory, you'd
eventually get used to changing convergence without changing focus ... but
then you'd have the same problems when viewing real-life scenes.
Each method of showing 3D has its own problems. Glasses that use high-speed
shutters, for example, have a problem with motion that is similar to the
artifacts of interlaced video, only worse. When the image is moving, the two
eyes never see exactly the same image. The image shown to one eye differs a
little from the image shown to the other, because they are separated in time.
Of course, you can show the same image temporally to both eyes, but they are
still separated in time for perception, and you halve the frame rate for
depiction of motion, which has consequences of its own.
There are many other problems.
Photography has had 3D for more than a century, and it has never caught on.
Motion pictures have tried it again and again, and it has never caught on.
It's a pretty good bed that 3D will never catch on, just as Smell-O-Vision
never caught on. It's just a gimmick.
