Subject: wide angle lens is great
I recently brought a Sony video camera to replace my 10 year old DV tape
camera.
One feature I'm very pleased with is the 3.8mm wide angle lens on the new
video camera (26.3mm when converted to 35mm still camera lens).
This is great for capturing more in the video. I can zoom out from a
performer and capture some of the audience watching him from behind their
heads. I can include people standing near by in the shot without them being
aware that they are being video recorded as the camera is not pointed
directly at them. I recorded a performer outside and noticed a girl near by
recording the performer on her mobile phone so I was able to include her in
the shot for added interest. It's good to be able to stand close to
something I'm recording not not have back away to get everything in the
shot. There is very little distortion when getting close to an object while
using wide angle setting.

Wide angle is also useful in helping the camera stay steady when moving
with the camera recording. Having an optical stabiliser in the camera also
helps.

There's a local (Silicon Valley) tech program I watch called Tech Now.

They take a lot of clips with what is obviously an afocal wide-angle
adapter. If it were a couple of dozen years ago, I'd even guess
Spiratone :-)

Main clues: easily visible barrel distortion, vignetting, and chromatic
aberration.
