I’d be happy with that. Instead of paying ~$64 each month for
comcast's basic, I could choose the SciFi Channel, USA, TNT, and
History Channels for just $14 each month.
what part of "UK" do you not understand?

You would really just go with those choices? That's pitiful. You aren't
very well rounded.
They already ARE forcing STBs on everyone. If you haven't gotten
yours yet, it's just a matter of time because the companies are
converting everything to digital (which requires a box to view). So
as long as the box is there, it can be used to turn-on or turn-off
different channels. A La Carte. Or you can continue paying a flat
monthly fee same as now.
As for ESPN, it would probably be sold at $5 or $6 due to its high
expense, but the other channels only cost between 25 and 75 cents so
the $2/channel model would work.
The other channels mostly show reruns (which I've already seen) or
crap which is not worth paying for, so it's no great loss. Those 4
channels listed (plus whatever I get with my antenna) are fine with
me.
Also it's called "sacrifice" which is a word most Americans are now
learning due to the poor economy. Although I could pay $30/month for
6,000 kilobit internet, I sacrifice and pay $15 instead for 700k
internet. Likewise I would sacrifice some less-viewed channels (like
Fox News) in order to keep television expenses down.
Of course that's not what cable salesmen want to hear. They want to
drive your expenses up. They hate a la carte because they hate losing
money.
I like having more than 200 channels. A la carte is not going to allow
that.
It would as long as you didn't mind a $1,000 cable bill.
These knuckleheads will never get it. The price will NOT be going down.
Basic is still a bargain if one doesn't care about lots of choices. If one
doesn't like it...there are plenty of cheap alternatives...OTA...online
(though you still need broadband or DSL access) or rentals. Netflix has a
$15 dollar monthly option. Or read a book. Of course this cheapskate
probably whines about the taxes it takes to fund his library too.
There are a few U.S. cable companies that offer A La Carte, due to
local mandate by their town or county. Most charge a flat rate of $5
for hookup plus $2 per channel plus sales tax.
Id be happy with that. Instead of paying ~$64 each month for
comcast's basic, I could choose the SciFi Channel, USA, TNT, and
History Channels for just $14 each month.

WTF are you on about? You are talking a foreign language. Please go away.
Thank you.

Are you talking about the same USA channel I get ? NCIS, MONK, Law and
Order SVU - these are ll reruns from netrwork TV and even on USA they
have reruns of these reruns. Even USA's "original programing" is
broadcast TV's rejects. Not to mention about 65% of TNT. I don't
watch Sci-Fi, but of those you mention, History Channel seems to be the
only one with any degree of original programming - but even then, there
are only so many Modern Marvels to show.

I'm not sure if NBC got a chance to broadcast Monk before it was
accepted for USA, but the episodes show on USA first.
Like the broadcast networks TLC is getting awfully many "reality"
contrived game shows for my taste.
While the cable channels are gradually bleeding viewers away from the
broadcast networks, those viewers are distributed across A LOT of
different cable channels. I'd be surprised if their viewer shares permit
them to sell commercials at a very high rate. Filling air time with
multiple plays of an episode allows that episode to generate more ad
revenue, recovering its production costs. Payments to rerun a network
series generates revenue for the network at a lower cost than producing
new content for the cable channel (accountants transfer funds from one
corporate subsidiary to another).
Even if full A La Carte weren't available, programming tiers could stand
more consistency about the channels they include. I shouldn't have to
pay for sports channels to get news channels. The same goes for shopping
channels (essentially 24/7 commercials) when I really want the
documentary channels. When a corporation owns channels that should be in
different tiers government regulations should prohibit bundling
(requiring a customer to pay for two channels to get either).
Well, this summer, TNT has been furnishing some of the best NON-rerun
stuff around. 2 shows out of a sporadic 4 watchable : 1 siffy late
summer and I think there was one somewhere else. And PBS.
Once "the season" gets under way, I watch 1 ABC, 2 Fox, a couple NBC(but
mostly Today), several CBS, CNN(I'm a bit of a news junkie and would
like to have MSNBC as well) , PBS, maybe siffy(though all I've watched
on it in months is Eureka). . . I might add History Channel if I could,
but we're still well below what I pay each month for a fairly limited
number of channels.

Monk is not a rerun. Monk is an original series. TNT has original
series. Sci-Fi has original series. History Channel has original
series. That's why I would pick those channels to add to my A la
carte lineup.
The other channels like TBS or Lifetime or Oxygen show nothing of
interest, which is why I would NOT pick them. Clear? :-)
False.
Having A la carte doesn't mean the packages we have now ($50 for
basic, or $80 for expanded digital cable) would disappear. You'd
still have the option to get 200 channel packages if that's what you
want, and for the same rate you pay now.
It's just like Sirius XM, which offers a la carte for its channels but
still provides the standard package deals.
