MONET
Late Paintings of Giverny
From the Musee Marmottan
January 7, 1995 - March 12, 1995
Claude Monet (1840-1926) is universally acclaimed as the founder of Impressionism and one
of France's greatest artistic geniuses. Beginning in the 1860s the Impressionists painted
the French countryside and scenes of everyday life, working primarily outdoors in front of
their subjects, emphasizing an immediate visual response to a specific moment. More than
any of his colleagues, Monet maintained his allegiance to the movement he pioneered,
keeping his unique sensitivity to nature.
This exhibition is the first in America to focus totally on the last twenty-six years of
Monet's life, from age sixty to eighty-six, when all of his energies were focused on
painting the gardens that he created at his estate in Giverny. The paintings portray the
famous water lily pond and its Japanese footbridge, the trellises of roses, the artist's
house and his flowers. The exhibition is made possible by an extraordinary loan of
twenty-two of Monet's finest works from the Musee Marmottan in Paris. This most important
collection of late Monet paintings in the world was the result of the 1966 bequest of
Michel Monet, the artist's son, to the Academy of Fine Arts, which administers both the
Paris museum and the artist's house and gardens in Giverny. This is one of the largest
loans ever made by the Marmottan and includes eight works, several monumental in size,
never shown before in the United States. Monet's paintings are supplemented with vintage
photographs of the artist in his studio and garden and an new series of color photographs
by American garden authority Elizabeth Murray, which vividly document the gloriously
restored gardens.
