The wife and I are planning a modest vacation (4-5 days in July or
August), and I thought of San Diego. I was there about 20 years ago (2 days
on business) but didn't really tour the place.
We can spend a day at the beach, but probably not more than that.
I've heard of the famous zoo. What else can one do in San Diego?
We've been to Mexico, so crossing over is probably not something
we'd want to do.
Thanks for any assistance.
Jay
Well, what do you like to do? There is an Old Town area that one can spend
a day or so at. There is a very vibrant restaurant and night club scene in
the Gaslamp District.

The big SD attractions are the SD Zoo, Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld, of
course. There are art and history museums. There are gardens and
parks. If you like baseball, the new Petco park downtown is open.
There are nice beaches. Shopping and fine dining are popular.
The air show comes to Mirarmar, but that's in October. The port often
has big Navy ships, and there is a harbor tour, should that interest
you. Chicano Park in Barrio Logan has murals that are worth seeing.
Go see Shakespeare and other plays in Balboa Park, or the LJ
Playhouse, or SD Rep, or many of the other theater companies.
Torrey Pines golf course is a city course, that anyone can play,
though you might see about making advance reservations.
Ride the trolley from one end of town to the other. Cross over to
Coronado -- have brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado, or just take off
your shoes and walk along the beach in front of the hotel. Ride the
roller coaster in Mission Beach.
Lots to do!

The Zoo is not that great, it is OK, but you should visit Seaworld instead
and have lunch with the killer whales! It is not to be missed if you are
going to San Diego.

Probably the Wild Animal Park's most special feature is being able to
drive out into the park's savannah and photograph the animals close
up; but I don't know how much extra this costs.
Someone else has been posting that the SD Zoo isn't so great, but I'd
like to know which US zoos are better. I was at the National Zoo maybe
10 years ago and it's a fine zoo, but it's had it's problems lately
with animal deaths. I do remember that at the same time, the SD Zoo
had long lines to view its pandas, and I was able to see the National
Zoo's panda with no lines whatsoever.
And to add to a previous posting of mine, Lego Land belongs on the
list with the zoo, Wild Animal Park, and SeaWorld.

In addition to the other suggestions, in July and August there will be

I have to say that I went to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps while I was in
La Jolla in February, and I was disappointed. I've been to other aquariums
like Monterey Bay Aquarium and Steinhart Aquarium (San Francisco), and by
comparison, Birch was much smaller and not that impressive. If you've been
to other good aquariums, you might want to skip Birch.
