They're especially interesting in the travel context of their times:
a factoid, hard to pin down to original sources, is that when he began
this series, some substantial majority of Americans had never flown
(in some versions it's "never taken a commercial flight aboard a jet,"
and the year can go even later). Certainly flying was not as
ubiquitous and inexpensive an experience as it is now... And even if
you're used to seeing cities from the air, how often do we see them on
a perfect day with the lighting and composition that takes an artist,
and from perspectives that don't have anything to do with the
standardized approaches and departures of jets?
