I will be traveling to Alaska in mid-May for an extended weekend - arriving
late Thursday and leaving late Sunday night. Will be flying into Anchorage.
I am looking for suggestions on activities, photo opportunities, etc. I
know nothing about Alaska or the Anchorage area. We would probably
interested in driving routes to see scenery and wildlife and possibly a day
cruise which is reasonably priced.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Ken: If you just have a few days I would go to Denali Park North of
Anchorage for scenery and wildlife. This will take at least one nite. A
bus ride into the park is the treat. You are not allowed to drive a car
into the park. Get an early -- 5 AM??? bus reservation and you can get
back on the road in the PM heading to Whittier where you catch the
'Alaska Marine Highway' Ferry to Valdez. It leaves Whittier around 2
PM. Check the schedules and make an early reservation for your car as
space is limited and in high demand. The trip takes 7 hours and goes
into a bay near a glacier. Overnite in Valdez and drive back to
Anchorage.

All reservations can be made on the net.

Have a great time. Next time you go to Alaska give yourself weeks
instead of days.

Good suggestions, both of 'em, but given the short time frame, I'd go with
either the Whittier-Valdez loop or the Denali trip. Squeezing both into a
long weekend is cutting it real close.

Another thought - if you're looking for spectacular views (what am I
saying - Alaska is one big spectacular view) - and wildlife viewing -
the Kenai Fjords tour is supposed to be spectacular.
http://www.kenaifjords.com/ I haven't personally done this - but I
know several that did and all raved about it.

Closer to Anchorage is Portage Glacier - an easy day trip - I've done
this one, and it was fun. There's an itinerary outlined here:

En route - if you're looking for good eats - have heard that the
Double Musky Inn in Girdwood is excellent.

Stick with Anchorage and the Kenai peninsula due to time constraints.
Portage Glacer and Alyeska resort are nice day trips from Anchorage.

yeah, i was going to suggest seward myself, particularly if they
want to go fishing. the sealife center is very interesting.

but then i like small towns, and only stay in los anchorage as
long as business occasionally requires.

kenai fjords *is* spectacular, and the double musky is a great
stop on the way.

and if they want to stay away from the ocean, talkeetna has some
interesting bars and eateries, as well as b&b's. if they can
afford it and the weather is right, a flightseeing trip up to
kahiltna glacier for a couple of hours is spectacular, but
*that's* pretty pricey.
