I live in the SF area and was confused about the LA subways.
Which parts of it are more like BART, which many people ride every day
and which parts of it are more like CalTrains which people mostly use
for going on a trip occasionally?

The subway is actually split into BART like and Muni Metro like. The
equivalent of Caltrain is Metrolink.

Is the metro in Pasadena (like Lake) more like BART?
