Will be in Le Paz, Todos Santos and possibly points South during the week
prior to Easter. Have traveled Mexico plenty but have avoided this area
until now. Need help with where to find reasonably good snorkeling and
some simple accomodations (don't care for the "chi-chi" places though
suspect crowd avoidance is impossible even without Easter). Would
appreciated hearing of any lesser "knowns" places and points of interest.

San Jose del Cabo is more of a town w/ambiance than Cabo San Lucas (mini
hotel strip). Hotel Colli has $20 rms and is right in the middle of the
town. There's a bird sanctuary near the Hotel Presidente. You can take
the local buses into Cabo. The driver will drop you off at Chileno and
Santa Maria beaches where you can snorkle close to shore and around the
rocks. The Hotel Palmilla is nearby so you can probably check it out
and have lunch there. There are also water boats that will take you out
to Land's End and drop you off at Lovers' Beach where you can swim and
snorkle the whole day. The last boat back is around 5 in the afternoon
and it's about 15-20 min. from downtown Cabo. La Paz is still very Mexican
and there are a lot of beaches there that we didn't get to visit. There's an
area of beautiful seascape and beaches between La Paz and San Jose (road
isn't that well-developed yet) that I'd love to explore the next time I'm
back in Baja. I've also been to the Yucatan and Pacific coastline and
wanted to get to know this part of Mexico. The Baja Peninsula is desert--
beautiful and the places I've heard so much about that are on my Baja
Mexican wish list are Mulege, Bahia de la Concepcion, Santispac Beach, San
Ignacio Lagoon and other areas where the whales spoon and spawn. The
marine life is unbelievable--I've never seen such HUGE tropical fish
while snorkling so it must be incredible for divers. You can take a
circle route from SJ del Cabo - Cabo San Lucas - Todos Santos - La Paz,
than back to SJ via coastal route for about $20 by bus or maybe less
because of the devaluation. My favorite resort in Cabo is Las Cascadas--a
thatch-roof type complex. Have fun!

Go to La Paz for incredible snorkeling. Here is where the snorkeling is
best. Take the bus to the ferry term. walk from there about 1/2 mile
along the road(away from town and on the main road) you will see two
restaraunts on the left..turn in to the restaurants and look parallel to
the beach up to the hills just beyond the restaraunts. take any trail
over the hill(about a 15 min. walk in the hot sun)...keep going till you
see the most beautiful cove imaginable. go to the far side of the cove
and you find the best place to enter the water..snorkeling is superb.
Also I would suggest bringing your own gear because the rental stuff is
terrible.
If you want cheap places to stay and dont mind off beat..go to the
hotel california...cheap...if you want better but cheap find the Hotel
Tiajuana...I cant remember where it is but its walking distance from
downtown...about 250 for a furnished apt. a month. Eat at a place called
the Acquarius restaurant...in the Hotel Aquarius. Cheap and good. Eat
tacos at a place called super tacos..a stand on the street..always
packed. YOu CAN drink the water out of the tap in La Paz. If you get too
hot and want to swim...we used to pretend we were staying at the los
arcos hotel and go swimming in their pool...
