Money in Rio de janeiro

I was in Salvador Brazil not too long ago and found that local
merchants would not or could not accept larger denominations of thier
currency. When I went to currency exchange offices, they did not have
small bills. Finally ended up going to banks and was somewhat
successful in getting smaller bills from a Citibank. Merchants could
not handle anything over a 10.00 bill.

Question: Does the same thing hold true for Rio de Janeiro????

It holds true for the whole of Brazil. Get small change and keep it like
gold dust (this of course is what everybody else does, which is why it
is so scarce)

If you exchange money in a casa de cambio, make sure you want change
(troco) in advance and if they say 'no' tell them you'll go somewhere
else.
