Recommended home base area near Canterbury, Rochester, England?

around Canterbury, Rochester, Dover would be? Any recommeded B&Bs too?
We also plan to hop on the Chunnel in the area rather than go back to London and
then get on the Chunnel since we'll be in the area.
Our plan is to take a train from London to Canterbury or near the recommended
area where we will pick up a rental car to see local sights until we need to
head to Paris.

I'm assuming you dont want the car carrying cross channel trains at
Folkstone but want to get on Eurostar as foot passengers, which you do
at London (St Pancras not Waterloo) or Ebbsfleet (on the Thames
Estuary) or Ashford. I'm not sure how many trains stop at Ebbsfleet
and Ashford?

There are more trains from Ebbsfleet than Ashford although for convenience
the OP probably wants Ashford. As Mike says the passenger carrying trains
are run by Eurostar. The car carrying service is run by Eurotunnel. I
would not reccomend trying to take a British car to France partly on cost
grounds and also because of the fact we drive on opposite sides of the road.
Chunnel is not a term that (in my experience) is in widespread use these
days.
I like the area around Goudhurst but I don't really think it fits the
requirement as far as accommodation is concerned in that it's a little away
from the targets.

Just one little caveat Steve, you cannot just hop on the Eurostar,
calling it the Chunnel is passe these days,
it is a bit like flying you need to get a reservation and ticket ahead
of time.
You might consider going from Brussels to Strasbourg.

times now so I'm aware that it isn't simply hopping on the train. There is the
reservation as you mention and the check-in process that differentiates this
very nice train from others.
By the way, is there a website for booking the entire trip from Ashford to
Colmar in one step without having to book two separate trips (Eurostar and TGV)?
I've heard people mention "DB" but not sure what that means.
