Right.
I already did - and used your mail address as the sender. You won't mind,
will you?
They will let you know the result shortly.

even if *you* block them they swamp the group for anyone considering
joining.

these people are trying to run businesses, they aren't usenet weirdos,
just foolish.

You think? Define "usenet weirdo". (For that matter, define "business"
as it pertains to spamming newsgroups with absolutely no connection to
the product offered.)
Mike's being a bit naive here. First, assuming that there _is_ a
business. Probably, it's a scam. Second, assuming they will respond to
any polite request to stop. Simplest thing is to filter them out.

He's not alone! (Why can't you do like everyone else does - if you
can't block them, scroll past them?) RTE is hardly the only target -
every newsgroup I post to has many of the same spammers. The only thing
that might be halfway effective is to send a complaint to their Internet
Service Providers. (But that was before Google, Yahoo, and all the ISP's
that pay no attention.)

Yes, this place is becoming less useful, and less entertaining each
week. I wont be renewing my subscription when it runs out, and it will
be a bit sad.

Which alternative forum for discussing travel in europe would you recommend?

r.t.e, and filter out google groups.

lonelyplanet.com's "Thorn Tree" forum is very good, and the
registration system keeps out spammers and most trolls.

Thorn Tree, Fodors, Trip Advisor...
They are all ok, but none of them tolerate idle chit chat, bad
language, or anything too confrontational. That's the good thing about
usenet, is that you can just say it without having to think about big
brother. The bad part is having to put up with loads of rubbish.

Every newsgroup, discussion forum or message-board has one.
He's ours.

I don't know who he is, but he's been in my killfile for years.
Doesn't stop him from replying to me.
Do yourself and us a favour and plonk him.
Perhaps it isn't them posting it?
They are usually not cross-posted, come in all at once and often are
totally different products meaning Chinese and definitely an English
speaking countries' spam, again in the same exact timeframe.
How about a poster that just wants to trash a NG and others that he/she
has also posted on and is just reposting this spam?
How many other NG's are getting this exact same spam, hundreds or just
a handful?
I have seen some of these earlier spams crossposted to just a handful
of NGs.
I don't know how computers display the topics & posts here but with
Webtv it's when anyone posts that topic comes to the top followed by all
that topic's posts.
In other words everything is in the order of whoever posted last.
So I'll see a batch of spam in 1 block if it is posted within minutes
of each other.
Here's an example and I count 5 different *types* of spam posted at the
*same time*.
What's the odds of say 5 different spammers posting within minutes of
each other?
Or 1 person just forwarding 5 different spams in order too flood a NG?
