I don't know if it's been proposed before, but a moderated group would
solve these problems. Of course, moderation introduces new problems as
well, so a balance must be struck.
I submit that this NG is a good candidate for moderation. I'm no
Usenet expert, but the job of rejecting junk posts (and auto-approving
regular posters) can likely be performed by a mod-bot while a group of
human moderators can do the work of approving n00b posts.

Yes, I think it has, not sure if the solution isn't worse than the
problem. However, one has to acknowledge this place seems to be losing
its best contributors and getting fewer enquiries.

If the 9 or 10 people who use this group for their personal pleasure of chit
chatting about anything and certainly not travelling chose another place,
people would come back with real enquiries and answers and spam would go
down.
If the enquiries are only about the city with the best toilet rolls in
public restrooms, people playing world class news reporters with links no
one wants to click on, philosophical blah blahs about anything except travel
etc etc....well this will not be the major source for travel info and it
isn't !
Problem is, you get a bunch of apatrids incapable of integrating the country
they live in, mostly bored old age or very old age people who have nothing
much else to do and at that age, a lot of them are completely ego-centered
and as they don't travel, don't care a bit about the subject.
So this is their private playground and nothing else.

file. I thought Forte Agent had a good filter system but it has been a while.
With a minute or two a day I can keep the file up to point where I see a
couple of pieces of spam in the twenty odd groups that I read.
I also lose the idiots as soon as I determine their primary identity, it takes
two clicks, persistent name changers take a little more but are well worth the
twenty seconds or so.

"Subscription"? "Runs out"? SFAIK, one simply clicks on "subscribe"
for any newsgroups that appear interesting, right clicks on the
news-server name, scrolls to any existing name you one wishes to
eliminate, and clicks "unsubscribe". The "subscription" stays in force
until you choose to unsubscribe - there's no "renewal" involved, because
there's no fee paid, hence no expiration date!

And create far more! You want a moderated group, start one. Most of
the regulars here like our newsgroups uncensored, despite the occasional
inconveniences of persistent spammers (who eventually move on, even
though this latest batch seem more persistent than most).

I think you are mistaken on BOTH counts! True, the spam ("chinese" and
otherwise) seems endless, but eventually the spammers move on - a
"moderator" would be be a PERMANENT curse!

I agree - spam here was/is awful and I stopped visiting here for a while.
BUT, to manually filter the spam ...
if you receive internet at home , get a newsreader (or even Outlook
Express/Mail - it comes with Windows).
That's how I view newsgroups.

you do not have to PAY for newsgroups as most ISP's (all 'home content
providers') include it for free. Maybe you didn't know that - call your
local ISP or check their website for how-to instructions.
There are good how-to websites for doing this, but an overview :
In the 'settings' for OE, I set it up to manually delete messages that
contain certain words ( browse thru the spam and define your own list of
"bad words"). When I fetch messages it deletes any with " those words" in
the subject , or " From" certain users, etc. Even then some messages get
thru my filter and then occasionally,
I " View" only new messages ( you can choose all, "new", only downloaded
etc) and make note of subjects or senders. Let's say a lot of stuff
related to "Brazil" and "Nike shoes". I then ADD Brazil and NIKE to my
list of "things to look for and delete". Or if a lot from "spamsender", I
add spamsender to FROM, I then choose APPLY and all of those messages are
deleted. ( the From is easily forged so usually not many from same
sender).
It is a nuisance to have do that periodically, but I find it works OK. (
That's what I'm doing right now - deleting all the crap and leaving "stuff
I care about" that I'll read later.).
Also, you can set OE to only download a certain number of messages ( say
500), so that when you do connect to a new newgroup, you don't spend 3
minutes downloading lots of old messages.
You can also right-click and choose CATCH-UP so all messages up to that
moment are considered "read" and will not be downloaded next time.
Lots of options. So try a newsreader - available via Google.

Even via Google - click GROUPS. That's usually where I start if I'm
looking for info. I do a search - find a group then search that group for
MY words. When/if found I click it and see the thread I care about ,not
the 800 spam postings. If I want to subscribe to that group, I note the
spam words, update my reader, then subscribe via OE. As the postings come
down, anything with " my bad words" in it is deleted. ( can choose subject
or 'contains in the body of message' etc)
