Paris to Giverny?

How do you get from Paris to Giverny? I want to go to Monet's house/museum
there. Is there frequent train service, and how do you get from the
station to the house?

*** I'm surprised to hear that the train cost that much. We took a
mini-van which picked us up at our hotel, took us to Giverny with
tickets included in the price of about $35. in 1994. You meet again
outside, visit the american Museum and then are taken back to your
hotel. Quite a good deal! Also saves waiting in line to buy the
ticket. It was magnificent in late March, with lots of tulips.

My wife and I did just the same thing last June. You can take a train
from the main station.. I forget what it is called, but you can get to

it from the subway system. The tickets cost about $50.00 round trip. A
bus will run you from the train station you end up at, to Giverny, which
is about a 5 mile trip. One word of caution: don't go on Monday..
Monet's Garden is closed that day.. we were very disappointed. The bus
ride was free, or very low cost, I really don't remember.
Trains run frequently, so don't worry about that. You might go to the
station and buy your ticket one day in advance, just to be sure. The
train we went on was almost empty.

Are you sure about it costing $50.00 round trip from Paris to Giverny? I
was there last October and paid much less (around $20.00 I think).

The train to Vernon ( which is the nearest rail head to Giverny)
leaves from St Lazare Station. The trip takes 45 minutes by train. If
yoiu decide to use the train then I recommend that you plan an early
start to catch a train leaving no later than 8:15. There is a gap
then until mid morning and you will not arrive at MOnets Garden until
midday allowing for the bus trip.

The bus from Vernon station to Giverny is easy to find...follow the
crown or just ask.

I used the train and compared my costs with the semi guided tours that
were available at that time...1993. For the cost of the tour I got
my return rail and metro fares plus a light lunch incuding beer at
the cafe outsiode Monet's House and entry fees. I suspect that the
comparative costs may be much the same.

More importantly it suited me to do the trip by rail and metro given
where I was staying in Paris. I like travelling at my own pace and
walking around cities in the early morning

I reckon Paris is one of the best cities for enjoying this style of
travel and could have done it more cheaply by choosing to delay eating
until I got back to Vernon or not ordering a sit down lunch and beer.

We were just at Giverney the week of April 1. Take the early train
(somewhere between 800 and 815 in the morning) from Gar St. Lazare to
Vernon. Fare is 133F round-trip. Arrive Vernon around 830. A bus awaits
you at the front of the station (there is a convenient sign board labelled
"How do you get to Giverney?"); fare is 19F round trip (buy ticket on
board). It only takes about 10 minutes. You arrive at Giverney about 20
minutes before it opens. When we went, there were only about 15 people on
the bus. We all pretty much had the place to ourselves for the first 15
minutes. My advice: go first to the pond (water lillies); it is much
nicer with fewer people. There are several bus/trains back to Paris, but
we took the first one, with bus leaving around 1130, meeting train leaving
around 1200. I'll dig up exact times, but this should give you a good
idea. We found that this gave us plenty of time there, and at the very
good gift shop. However, we did not have time to go to the American
Impressionist museum, which some have recommended.
