I visited this afternoon the retrospective exhibition of the works by
Anthony Van Dijck at the Fine Arts Museum of Antwerp from May 15 1999
until August 15 1999.
A lot of famous international museums lent their masterworks of the
Antwerp painter for this exhibition. If the artist painted a lot of
portraits, you will be able to see also biblical and mythological
themes. Even the "Hermitage museum" of St.Petersburg will send six
works never shown abroad and the "National Gallery" of Washington
restored specially " Queen Henrietta and her midget" for this event !

Antwerp expects for this Van Dijck year a lot of people. It would be
wise to foresee the reservation of entrance tickets and guides. You
must already reserve from today ( especially for the great
retrospective at the Fine Arts Museum) or :
by phone 070/233.799 ( drop the zero calling from abroad)
fax 07./233798

Besides the main exhibition, a lot of side events will take place all
over cultural Antwerp :
---the "Rubens house" will expose drawing and sketches of landscapes
Van Dijck made during his stay in England. The drawings executed in
"aquarelle" represent the beginning of English landscape art of which
artists as Gainsborough, Turner and Constable will take their
inspiration later. ( from May 15 to August 8)
---the printers museum Plantin-Mortetus will give you the opportunity
to discover the skills of Van Dijck in the art of etching. ( from
October 9 to January 9 year 2000).

Other manifestations will take place. Just contact the local Tourist
Office.
