The Economist have always hated Berlusconi, and they're not likely to
change their view.
I have learned to hate him, due to his long history of looking after
himself, and letting the country go downhill. It wont be any different if
he gets in this time. Sadly we may need to move countries if things keep
going downhill like this.

Call me a softy, but I got a bit of a warm fuzzy feeling when the
Sarkozys were over in the UK recently. Despite the disgusting gutter
press of the UK printing nude photos of her on the day she arrived, she
was the picture of elegance, and he was incredibly graceful, almost
gushing, towards the host country.
The current Private Eye has two pretty funny cartoons on the visit. I
don't see it on the website version though.

Or getting rid of the bureaucracy? Sounds like the less govt. spiel
which Bush talked about and the opposite happened. The govt. got even
bigger and is the only employer hiring in the US.

Now, this is not just a case of the Guardian being "left" (it actually isn't
particularly) and therefore disliking Berlusconi's policies. The entire tone
of this article is different from that which the paper would normally use
when discussing the politics it would describe, in daft journalese, as
"centre-right". An article discussing, say, Merkel, Sarkozy or Rajoy would
be entirely different. You couldn't substitute their names in this sentence:
"Mr Berlusconi reformed the pension system, but otherwise spent most of his
time staving off the prosecutors, by hook or by crook (usually the latter)."
The re-election of Berlusconi is likely to bring Italy into international
disrepute.

On the last cheapo bus I got from Liverpool Airport to Manchester last
week, a Polish guy was arguing with the Italian ticket seller (woman)
that his ticket was valid. From what he was saying, it clearly wasn't.
She was standing her ground. She even called up 'central office' in
Italy. Meanwhile he was getting belligerent, and she warned him she'd
have to get security. 'Central office' said no, and still he argued.
Despite them both having perfectly good English, she asked the driver
(Polish) to explain to him he had to buy a new ticket or get off the
bus. He was still refusing, so she got off the bus to get security.
Then, he relented and bought a ticket.
Just before arriving at the stop in Manchester, we were stuck because of
some roadworks. Two Spaniards in front of us started complaining, then
asked the driver to drop them off where they were. He explained he
wasn't allowed to. One of the Spaniards complained that she'd 'miss' her
connection if he didn't. That was interesting, because she was on the
same flight as me, and we both got on an earlier bus than expected
because our flight was very early! Anyway, he still refused, and then
she said that the 'other driver' let them get out there last time. He
replied "maybe he didn't care about his license and his job. I care
about both, and you'll wait until we get to the stop." That shut her up.
We were only a couple of minutes late.
All in all, a moving story of immigration to the UK! :)

In the Manchester case, it's clear where the bus stop is- and the woman
who wanted to get out clearly knew where it was too!
_However_.... the first time we used the service, we went to the stop
clearly marked on their website. They had the street right, but the
wrong stop- indeed, you can't see that stop from the one they marked. We
just assumed no bus was coming, and had to get a taxi to the airport,
which was the same price as the flights!
They've corrected it now...

The bookmakers are not taking money on whether Berlusconi will reform
the economy, or improve the life of Italians in general, they are
taking money on whether he will persuade people to vote for him.

I very much doubt it. The Guardian seems pretty knowledgable about the
political background of Italian politicians. Since Napolitano was a
Communist of a ceratin age, it would be surprising if he had not supported
the invasion of Hungary, which he would have construed as a request for help
from a friendly country. (I leave modern analogies to your imagination.) As
late as the 1980s, Fr Jack Putterrill, an Anglican priest and a stalwart of
the CPGB, firmly believed that the later invasion of Czechoslovakia was
right.
