A new Museum of Art and History of Judaism will be opened in the fall
1998 in a hotel particulier of the Marais.
71, rue du Temple, a stone throw away from Beaubourg, the restoration
of de hotel de St.Aignan is in it's terminal phase. The opening is
planned in october 1998. The greatest part of the collection will come
from the actual Jewish Museum, rue des Saules, in the XVIII arr. This
hotel of the Great century is not so far from Jewish history as it
seems : situated in the Marais, Jewish area since the Middle Ages, it
was occupied last war by Jewish craftsmen, of which a lot have been
raided and became victims of the famous " rafle du Velodrome d'Hiver
in July 1942.
The building is a magnificent one. It's a remarkable testimony of the
architecture of the 17th century. The disappearance of traditional
ways of Jewish life and the recession of Jewish practice urged the
Jewish community to keep some remains of an identity fading away
quickly.
Al the objects and works , evoking art, history and civilization will
be shown on 1200 square meters, adding another 260 sq.m.for temporary
exhibitions.
One problem will arise : will the new museum close on Fridays and
Saturdays as the old one of the rue des Saules?

My friend Jack, who has much more expertice than I wrote:

Jack,
Are you suggesting that a Jewish Museum should stay open on Shabbot? How about
Yom Kippor? Or the just passed Yom HaShoah? How can we be Jewish and not
reflect our Jewishness?

Of course you are right! I'm surprised that you might think a second i
would support the idea of a Jewish museum to be open on Saturdays or a
holy yom-tov. My article is not invented but inspired by an
announcement i saw in the bi-monthly edited " Le Journal des Arts"
where they announce this new museum. The hotel de St.Aignan is the
property of the city of Paris and problems about the opening hours and
days seem to be a discussion. I'm not at all implying that they should
be open on Saturdays or festive days. I was just ironic about it.
Next time i will leave the irony out , cause i see it could hurt
people and that's the last thing i want :-).

But irony makes for an interesting ng Jack; just mark your irony with
appropriate smileyfaces - e.g. ;) or :P - so that people pick it up.

Keep posting! - your articles are consistently among the most
interesting on r.t.e.

Cheers,

<G> or <g> I guess, depending on how ironic
you wanted to be...

It didn't exist. Something new within the past few years. Personally, I
don't much like it, and I really think it is a fad like the "Pet Rock". We
will see, though. Maybe this irony will go out with the Spice Girls.
Don't know though. I just hope it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
Thats all this society needs. A bunch of people running around waiving
their irony in the air. Dangerous if you ask me....

BTW... :)
