I've never heard of your silly movie, but I've stayed in many great
youth hostels in Germany, including several in castles. I suspect YOU
have no idea what YOU are talking about.

Yeah, this is funny. It reminds me of the time that some people were afraid
to come to Texas after seeing the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" movie....it's
just a certain mentality.

ok, but is the hostel movie based on a true story. I thought that it

Care to let us in on the secret of the film title, cast, year it
appeared? Like Mary, I never heard of it, and I suspect most of the
people reading this newsgroup have not, either.

'Hostel' is not that unheard of. I've not seen it, but it's certainly
been well advertised. There's at least one sequel too. It's a horror
flick- pretty graphic from what I gather.

So what is it about ??
Hostels are generally equal to hotels but with a lower service level.
Do you really think the whole hotel industry is to close down because there
have been a hotel movie or something ?
In Sweden alone there're around 150 STF (member of YHF) hostels and 13 new
opened for this y so they seem to be o.k Prices may bee 200SEK-300 for
a single or 150-200SEK shared to be compared with hotel prices.

Lennart wanted to know what it was about. Wiki does way better on this.
I haven't seen the film, but I very much doubt (based on reading Wiki
film synopses in the past) that it's far off base.

No, sure. But it's the one aspect of wiki that I find reliable. It's a
bit like asking a friend about a film that you know they've seen. You
might not get it 100% accurately from them, but it's enough. Not enough
for serious research, of course! :)

It doesn't tell you the plot! "The 3 friends didn't know what they were

Perhaps you're talking about Wikipedia , a wiki is a community and there
are thousands of them
http://www.wiki.com/
Anyway as I can read out from Wikipedia it's an American horror story from
2005 about a Bratislava hostel but supposed to origin from a true story
in Thailand in the 1990:s
Why should anyone be afraid of staying in a decent European hostel because
of an 10 y old event in Thailand ?

Search me. It was a troll.
I posted about it in July last year. Google "chainsaw horror" for this
group.
American movie set in Slovakia and acted by Czechs.
Do they have such things as backpacker hostels in the US? I've never
heard of one.

Seem to be a number of them being members of the IYHF
http://www.hihostels.com/
And isn't YMCA something like a backpacker hostel ?
>So what is it about ??
The film is about American boys who travel to Slovakia (it was
actually filmed in the Czech Republic and Cesky Krumlov is prominent)
and are tricked by two girls to enter a pay-for-torture pleasure
palace in an abandoned factory. Once inside, paying guests are allowed
to torture and murder people to their heart's content. One boy is
tortured to death, the other escapes, but just barely.
It is quite gory and violent. The hostel in the film is where the boys
meet the girls. It has no other significance, outside of the obvious
hostel/hostile reference.
Members of Slovakia's tourist board complained bitterly about the
film, but I doubt they could show any harm was done. I visited
Slovakia last year and it was just fine. The weather was perfect,
people were nice, etc.
I feel much safer in Bratislava than I do in Baltimore, so there ya
go.
- TR
- off to Las Vegas on business tomorrow. Gawd, I hate that city.
There are some, but not near the wonderful system you have in Europe. They
are in big cities, or around major attractions; although the natives may not
even know they are there. Here in Atlanta, we've had several during the past
20 years, but I think there is only one now. The sad part is, the
transportation options aren't as as numerous and cheap. It's just plain hard
to backpack in the U.S. without having to do some flying. Trains are mainly
in the northeast and even the bus system doesn't go everywhere anymore.
Another thing -- adults would never dream of going to them, like in Europe.
I stay in hostels often overseas, but Americans don't go on vacation and
stay at a hostel (except some college kids, of course).
And in regard to Lennart's comment about YMCAs. Yes, they used to be like
that, and there are still a few that offer that service. Certainly in New
York. But in much of the U.S. they've turned into profit-making neighborhood
gyms (there have been court cases over their nonprofit status). The growth
of the automobile system after WWII, and the rise of cheap (ish) motels
really killed the need.

Definitely not based on any true story, and it's pretty poor as a movie,
except for the vicious torture scenes, if that's your bag.
I'd like to see it set in Israel. THAT would be interesting!

That explains it - NOT my favorite genre, so if trailers for it were not
widely shown on U.S. television, I would remain blissfully unaware of
its existence.

Look, Hostel was a good film, OK? Accurate, and fair.
