My wife and I are booked for a day trip in early
January. We arrive at Le Havre about 8.30 am and sail
back from Cherbourg to Portsmouth at about 5 pm; we
shall drive between the two. Last year we did the same
trip and saw the Abbey des Dames and the War Memorial
Museum at Caen. Has anybody any ideas on how we could
spend out time this year?

You could visit the basilica at Lisieux, or the museum at Bayeux.

I suggest a visit to Honfleur which is just across the Seine by the Pont
de Normandie. It's a scenic, if touristy, fishing port. There is a
museum dedicate to the 'father' of French Impressionism, whose name
escapes me! Was it Eugene Boudin?

Then you can take the coastal road to Trouville/Deauville and onwards to
Cabourg and Caen, finding somewhere to eat early in one of the seaside
towns on the way.

An afternoon could usefully be spent in Bayeux although if you have to
get to the ferry terminal for 4.15pm you'll just about fit in a visit to
the tapestry (1066 and all that). Then you should just have enough time
to get to Cherbourg - I would allow 1 h 15 min - 1 h 30 min from Bayeux,
because you can easily get stuck behind tractors and petrol tankers in
the on the single carriageway part of the N13 just north of Bayeux and
in the traffic at Cherbourg.

Hi

In one day, you can have a look on Rouen, about 90 kms from Le Havre, 45
minutes by train; You can see the city of Rouen page (
http://www.mairie-rouen.fr/ ) with different links, and my home page
(http://wwwperso.hol.fr/~braun000) on which I have put some information
in english about Rouen. You will find a medieval city, capital of
Normandy, with a Musée des Beaux Arts where you can see some
Impressionist, especially Claude Monet's Cathedral of Rouen (for the
present cathedral, see http://ndrouen.simplenet.com/ ).
On the way to Cherbourg, Honfleur is a good idea.

Have a nice trip
