Let's not forget that the birthplace of Impressionism is Normandy! I
see already a few people frowning, doubting that I have my entire mind.
I did some research and came to a personal conclusion: Normandy WAS the
great outdoor atelier of the late 19th century painters. The whole
coast and its resorts where visited by the greatest artists who will
create that great artistic period. Dieppe, Etretat, Le Havre,
Trouville, Deauville…..
They set down their easels and tried to give a true impression of the
bucolic sights around them, cloud soaked skies and the surf-plattered,
gray-green sea. It's indeed there that Impressionism was born. Which
doesn't mean it stayed there. We all know that a lot of painters moved
to the south of France to look up the incredible Mediterranean and
Provence light.
Some of the artists came from Paris, others from other countries: think
about J.M.W.Turner and Richard Parkes Bonington who started a cross-
Channel exchange of ideas from England. Johan Barthold Jongkind came
from Holland, James Whistler and John Singer were in the vanguard of
American artists who later came in waves to find the genial Monet
painting in Giverny.
A lot of great French painters were born in Normandy: Nicolas Poussin
in Les Andelys in 1594, Theodore Géricault (the Radeau de la Meduse)
was born in Rouen in 1791, and met the young Delacroix who went to
school in Rouen. J.F. Millet was born near Cherbourg in 1814, Eugene
Boudin in Honfleur in 1924, Raoul Dufy in Le Havre in 1877 and Fernand
Leger in Argentan in 1881. Braque and Pissarro ended their days in
Normandy.
Next pots I will detail the lives of different Norman impressionist
painters.
