I will be in alone in Bari for one day and night (9/18) after having
spent one week with friends in a villa outside Siena and another week
with friends hiking in Puglia between Brindisi and Bari. I would really
like to spend this pre-flight day at the beach, but the Best Western La
Baia Palace is fully booked as are many of the hotels in the city. Can
anyone suggest somewhere charming or funky to stay as well as some
interesting ways to spend the time? My primary interests are cultural,
but I wouldn't mind shopping, too. Is the city interesting enough to
simply spend the day strolling around? And can you recommend someplace
good/fun to have dinner? I live in NYC, have spent an enormous amount
of time all over Italy, and speak enough Italian to get around. Grazie!

You need to check with another reservation service like
www.bestwestern.com (the franchisee's system). I just
did and found rooms available at this property. Often,
reservation services advise "rooms not available" when
what they really mean is "hotel's computer not available."

If you haven't been there before I suggest you visit Alborobello with it's
trulli houses.
Beaches are no fun in Puglia.

Thanks for the beach info and pix. We will be spending most of a day in
Alberobello during the Brindisi-Bari hike. What I'm wondering about is
things to do in the city of Bari itself.

I've never seen a sand beach in Puglia, Barbara.
Maybe they are there but probably not since I travelled a large stretch of
coastline.

Bari is a beautiful city. It also has the name of most criminal city of
Italy.
I stayed there some days and liked it very much.

I have just came back from the Region Le Puglie..
I can confirm you will have wonderful times in Alberobello
and will enjoy good meals between 15 and 25 euros.
My other places were :
Castellana Grotte / (The biggest caves in Italy)
Barletta
Trani
Melfi not in puglie though Basilicata..
Castel del Monte..
and many many other towns within a few kms from Bari.

the best known place for beaches is the town of Ostuni
also famous for its white houses.
I do not think there are many things to see in Bari
(the locals told me not to lose too much time there..
besides. it is a little dangerous.. )

I was surprised people were so kind and food so good..
wine and olive oil is a must there..
prices are also cheaper than in the north
quality of air. traffic congestions.. blue sky
all things that would make me consider living there..

the best beaches apparently are far from Bari
in the Park of Gargano

being Peschici and Vieste the most renown places.
you can find everywhere apartments for rent for about 50 eur a day ( two to
4 places )

In Alberobello there are also Trulli for rent.

plenty of info in the net.

hotels are about 70 to 100 eur/night ( 4 stars)
you can find them easilt with
www.venere.it

if you have time
go as far as Matera famous for its Sassi ( caves where people used to live..
today a monument )
or Lecce.. the most beautiful town of Le Puglie.

But i do not think that a day will be enough to see more than Alberobello
and castel del Monte.

There certainly are sand beaches in Puglia. I have seen pictures of
them.

I have spent time in Puglia, and never seen a beach more that about 10
metres wide, and packed with people.

And myself. Never found a decent beach, or even a half decent one.
Plenty of rocks though.

It has a direct ferry to Durres in Albania. Possibly not a
coincidence.

Something about there not being much in the way of beaches in Puglia.
The rest was just me being facetious.

Should there be a smiley there somewhere?

I have been to many big beaches, none of them were in Puglia. Or
should I say "Apulia" as I beleive its spelled in English.

(yes, I put those typos in on purpose. I like it that way)

Beaches in Puglia are good, but you should avoid beaches too near to
major coast towns (pollution would be high).

I lived 11 years in Bari when I was a kid, and the city was reasonably
trouble free at the time. Food was fantastic. After I left, there was an
invasion of drug dealers from the other side of the Adriatic (duly
complemented by dealers on our side of the Adriatic), and I am now told
by my old friends that petty crime (and sometimes, not-so-petty crime)
is rampant. The most dangerous area is the old city, a casbah-like
labirynth of narrow alleys. Do not bring much money there, no jewels, no
bags and purses, and you should better be accompanied by a local.

Alas, all major sights are in the città vecchia or at its borders: the
S. Nicola church (with the tomb of Santa Klaus, so important that
Orthodox churches asked to have a chapel in the church); the Cathedral
(very nice Apulia romanesque); and maybe the old Castle.

Apulia has a quantity of Romanesque churches (the Cathedral in Trani,
with its tall towerbell overseeing the open sea, is breathtaking), and a
couple of nice castles. Lecce has many baroque churches. Martina Franca
has a nice town centre, as well as Otranto. Apart from this, Apulia has
few of the cultural attractions that in most places of Italy are taken
for granted.
