I'll be spending a week in Paris in late May. Has anyone made
the trip to Monet's home at Giverny? What were your impressions
(sorry about the pun) and any tips on transportation options?

I enjoyed my visit there, which is the prelude to the following comments.
There are *none* of Monet's works at Giverny. There are *more tourists* per
square foot there than anyplace I've been in Paris.

This is not to dissuade or disparage, only to inform!

One popular way to get there is by rail to Vernon, then by bus or cab to
Giverny. There are probably bus tours from Paris as well. If you were
feeling very energetic you could combine an afternoon trip to Giverny with a
morning in Rouen, a charming Norman city that is a bit further ou on the
same rail line.

Have a great trip!

Rita,

My wife and I visited Giverny in Early May 2 years ago. It was one of
the highlights of our vacation.

You can go by commuter train + taxi or have a tour (either with a small
group---more expensive--- or a full bus). Ask the concierge at your
hotel. The tour option is in many ways more convenient but costs more.

One caution... You can not bring food into or buy food at Giverny so
schedule meals around your visit. It is almost always very crowded.

Thanks to those who responded. Sounds as if it is indeed a worthwhile
side trip. And good to know about the food thing.

If you care about art at all, particularly Impressionism, then Giverny will
be a real experience. While there are none of Monet's paintings there, there
is a fine collection of Monet's Japanese woodblock prints, around 117 of
them. Down the street from Giverny is an American museum containing some of
the works of people who studied there with Monet including the likes of Mary
Cassat. The painting are not especially noteworth artistically but are more
so historically since they are part of the movement of American
Impressionism. Further down the street there used to be a nice looking B&B.
I would liked to have stayed there but aside from Giverny there is not much
else to do there.

There is a rather nice museum down the street, the Musée d'Art Américain in
Giverny:

Had a very charming lunch on the deck on a beautiful day. I forget exactly
what we ate but I remember there were a couple of distinctly american
dishes on the menu.

Well, yes, I do care about art. And since so many of Monet's paintings
were done there, I would like to see it. Sounds like more my kind of thing
than visiting palaces or chateaus. Are there any particularly interesting
small villages that would make a good day trip from Paris? Somewhere
pleasant, easily walkable, yes, "picturesque" but not touristy?

Nowdays a day trip can be quite a distance from Paris. Year ago we follow
"Europe by Eurail" and day trips included Chantilly, Chartres, Versailles
and the like. Now you can see on this board people are going to Brugges,
Alsace and the likes for day trips. I personally liked Chartres but you
might consider Meaux or Reims. Take a look at www.bonjourparis.com and move
down to the day trip section. She gives some interesting choices including
the former.

As for art, if you like Monet then you must go to the Marmottan Museum in
Paris and see the Monet's they have including "Impression Sunrise", the
painting that started it all.

I did it some years back in late September ... the gardens were in
full bloom and it was a lovely, relaxing way to spend some
time...train to Vernon, then cab or bus to the gardens. I was
traveling alone and ended up sharing a cab both ways with other
Americans waiting at the cab stands, so it wasn't too expensive..I
think the bus ran less frequently.......

You can tour the home but you can't take pictures inside...however,
you can happily shoot away in the gardens...its all there..the green
bridge, the bench, the weeping willows and lily pads, just like in his
paintings... the studio has been turned into a gift shop...

In may during the week you shouldn't find it too crowded. Don't try to go on
Mondays, it's closed except for local painters. And Wednesdays are school
outings.
