Hello all,

This is my first time posting here (or visiting) on this group. I'm a student touring Europe and I'm planning to go tour Chernobyl and Pripyat. I found that going with a group would make the tour seem more private and give us group discounts (around 4 people are necessary for discounts.)

Might any English speakers be interested in forming a group for such an event?

And what's with all these Obama posts on a travel/european group?

Regards,
Ahmed

No thanks.
When a friend was last in Kiev the fish from the river could still not be eaten safely!

Yeah, I read a lot about that. You can't even drink the tap water and in some places you cannot even touch the ground/dirt. Spooky stuff, that is why I'm interested haha.

Then, you better stay away from Germany, too! Or at least avoid wild
pork and mushrooms!

And Welsh sheep & grass were caught, I seem to remember.
We're back into eating Welsh lamb now, but I think I'll pass on Kiev fish!

Haha, I like where this thread is going, but wow. I knew that it had contaminated vast masses of Europe, but I never thought that it had done it so intensely.

Speaking of fish, part of the tour involves feeding mutant cat fish O_O

Not by the nuclear explosion, but the radioactive fallout afterwards, if
you really think that matters!
There are areas in Bavaria were hunters still today have to burn about
50% of shot pigs, because of high contamination.

"Wild" pork????? Do they still hunt boar in Europe?

Germany is full of them. They cause big damage in farming. In the last
years, they are even invading big cities like Berlin.

Yes, certainly in Germany and Italy.

There's an area in Italy where you can only hunt the wild boar with
'primitive weapons'.

Which is probably a sight more dangerous than eating the fish in
Kiev...

and they can be dangerous. They can attack you, particularly if you
encounter a one with piglets.

They're currently deliberately re-importing boar and wolves into the wild in UK. I'm not quite sure why - they're not endangered species elsewhere in Europe I think? Inevitably, the farmers (and others) aren't happy.
I was quite amused when I once really did have to convince a US visitor that bears had disappeared from our wild!

I believe you! (Although humans don't care to recognize the fact, pigs
are among the most intelligent of our four-footed "relatives", and IIRC,
wild pigs come equipped with rather formidable tusks!)

No they're not.

The wild boar lose in the UK are descendants of ones that escaped from
a farm.

http://www.wildlifeextra.com/go/news/uk-wildboarinbritain.html#cr

No wolves have yet been introduced. There is quite a movement to have
them reintroduced to try and reduce damage by deer in forests but
pressure from Scottish farmers (read 'Scottish aristocrats with vast
estates devoted to shooting') have stopped it so far.

Some years back I was walking with a group of friends in the forests
north of Frankfurt. One of them had the brilliant idea of offering some
food to a wild boar. The story ended with us all racing to escape the
entire pack, and we finally rescued ourselves by throwing our all our
sandwiches away to distract the animals.

Some years ago, I nearly hit one at dusk entering the Disney Land Resort
east of Paris, when a hoard suddenly cut my way.

Aren't you old enough for this not to be a problem (the potential background
radiation, not the fish)

ISTR you're older than me, and I'm old enough not to care

Well, my mate who couldn't eat the Kiev fish is older than me ...
