ArtWork, "The North's Original Independent Free Arts Newspaper", is now
on-line at

http://www.ed.ac.uk/~ghs/artwork/artwork.html

So far this is just their Diary section, so it's a very poor substitute
for the paper version, but presumably it'll improve. ArtWork has run some
of the sharpest articles I've read about the Scottish scene; it has managed
to be, I think, the only publication ever banned by the Mitchell Library
(for what it had to say about Pat Lally and Glasgow District Council).
It's what's-on guide is pretty good, albeit they have yet to get round to
recognizing the existence of traditional music.

(No, I've got no connection with it. As far as I know I've never even met
the people who produce it).

Or for that matter, contemporary dance.

Oh, dear - someone else using our systems for their web pages - I wonder
if they have any kind of permission?

There's an old Polish proverb which says,
"it is far easier to seek forgiveness than seek permission."

Funny - I was thinking that on my way to work this morning whilst
pondering on this very case, though I hadn't realised the proverb was
Polish. I failed to find a snappy way to phrase the updated version:
"It's easier to find out if it's permissible to run a Web server than to
get your work done without an account after it's been terminated because
you broke the Computing Regulations."

That's probably academic, since the username that is referenced (ghs)
belongs to Giles Sutherland, the editor of EdINFO, so I hope he's done his
homework. I hadn't checked that when I wrote yesterday and if I've caused
any undue embarrassment I apologise. There has, however, been a fair
amount of discussion recently about what it is legitimate to publish on
JANET and it makes one sensitive.

I'm having you on, after having watched far too many of those 1973
Banacek TV-movies recently. I actually got the phrase off Phil
Treleaven about 15 years ago.
