day trips from Paris by train

Greetings - I'm going to be based in paris for two weeks but have a Eurail
pass (I love trains.) Can anyone recommend scenic one-day train trips
out of the city? (Further afield than Versailles, etc.) Somewhere that
takes me through nice countryside and ends up at a city with a good museum
or shopping.

Rouen, Tours, Lille are all about 1 hour from Paris by train. Reims is
about 1.5 hours and Lyon is about 2 hours from Paris. I don't know how
scenic the train rides are.

Troyes is an excellent destination. It has two fine museums, one of which
has a couple of gorgeous little Watteaus and some fine Dutch still life,
the other is a museum of modern art in a restored Friary or Cloister,
which has the largest collection of Derains in the world. He was one of
the original Fauve painters, along with Matisse and Braques, but by the
1920s he had rejected some elements of Modernism and was more interested
in painters like Corot and Caravaggio. He was also a huge influence on
Balthus.
Chantilly is also quite a treat - not as far - only about a half hour, but
certainly worth a visit. The Musee Conde is housed in a magnificent
chateau which rises out of a pond on a landscape designed by the same
fellow that designed the Tuilleries and the Luxembourg gardens, LeNotre.
The museum features, among other things, several great Poussins, and
Raphael's wonderful "Three Graces".

Amiens, Reims, Lyon, are all reachable in a day. If you haven't been to
Chartres, be sure to do that one, too.

Well, if you have that eurail pass, using the TGV (paying only for the
Reservation), you can easily reach Lyon (2 hrs) and Bordeaux (3 hrs)
(and even Brussels (1:25 hrs) by Thalys!).
The rides aren't really scenic (high speed lines), but not actually
boring, except maybe the Brussels Line - the country just gets too flat
in the north.

There are several terrific possibilities but I think the most special is
probably to take the train to Vernon to visit Monet's home in Giverny.
Just go for the day and enjoy the most enchanting garden. There's a bus
from the train station but it is fun and very easy to rent a bike at the
train station and ride to Giverny.

Musee de La Paix (otherwise known as the Memorial (accents omitted))
which covers the Normandy landings and the history of war and peace in
this century and of the Nobel prize. I think it is the best medium sized
museum anywhere. And it is done in an extremely sensitive manner on a
very sensitive subject.

I agree with the suggestion of a trip to Monet's home in Giverny. If possible,
before and/or after the trip, visit the Musee Marmottan and Musee l'Orangerie
in Paris. Marmottan has a fabulous collection of Monets, and the basement of
l'Orangerie was built specifically to hold a series of HUGE Giverny water lily
paintings Monet did late in life. Seeing them before seeing Giverny makes the
visit even better.
