Rome: Scala Reale http://www.scalareale.org/
Florence: Firenze Antica http://www.firenzeantica.org/
We took Scala Reale tours in both '99 and '01. We took Firenze Antica
tours in '00. We would book again with either/both these groups in a
heartbeat!
Both organizations are superb, but they are not for everyone. Do not
book with either of these organizations if you want a superficial
"highlights" tour. Tours from both organizations are conducted by
experts in architecture, classicism, and art history. If you want
knowledgeable guides who are able to transmit their formidable knowledge
in a friendly, accessible way, then, these tours are for you.
Scala Reale offers both semi-private (6 people to a group) and private
tours while Firenze Antica offers only private tours.
If Scala Reale does not fill one of its regularly offered semi-private
tours, the tours goes anyway, and you get essentially a private tour.
(On our recent visit to Rome, our tour of art treasures in situ was a
private tour by default. Our tour of the Tiber River area -- both sides
of the river -- had a full contingent of six.)
And while I'm on the topic of walking tours, Venicescapes, is the
organization in Venice which offers the same kind of informative tour.
