Have a good trip. You are, as usual, connecting to Norway at Paris CDG?

It something that has happened to me on every flight I've made with a

Nor I, because I've not traveled anywhere since 2003 (and my last couple
of trips were non-stops within the US). Once I began to find walking
difficult, I realized I was spending most of my stay in my hotel room,
watching TV in a foreign tongue. That seemed a rather expensive way to
improve my language skills, especially when the overcrowding and
increasingly strict security measures had made the actual travel less
than enjoyable. (If I want to watch foreign-language TV, we have five
Spanish channels in Phoenix, and I could actually USE an improvement to
my Spanish.)

That is most certainly true. If you have a connecting onward flight,
you have to make sure when you buy duty free liquids that the vendor
seals them in a tamper-free bag good enough to satisfy security checks.
There is a way round it - you go out of the security area at the
transfer airport, and check the stuff in for the second leg.

That's not enough, I'm afraid. These sealed bags will only be accepted
from a limited number of airports outside the EEA- and exclude any in
India, as I found out...

That doesn't always work.

Certainly airside security at Heathrow confiscates some sealed bags
because they don't trust the airports that sealed them. I've seen it
happen this year.

A BA hostess was carrying a sealed bag with a couple of bottles in it
from an African airport and she had it confiscated. She was, quite
rightly, livid.

They were talking crap, as they did to us at Delhi. I actually
complained about this to the airport, and here's a bit of the
correspondence. (In reverse order.) Needless to say, the information was

Hello,

None was provided by Zurich, and we had a very tight connection.
However, it's not necessary to have one for you to take the action I
suggested. Let me repeat, all EU/EAA airports will not allow any
'sealed' duty free from Indian airports if it contains liquids in
containers over 100ml. The only airports for which they will allow such
sealed bags are those from airports in the EU, Switzerland, Norway,
Croatia, Iceland, Malaysia, Singapore, the US or Canada. You can check
the wording here:

http://www.swiss.com/web/en/services/baggage/carryon_baggage/Pages/new_s
afety_rules.aspx

Or for another airport with flights from DEL, Frankfurt,

http://www.frankfurt-airport.com/content/frankfurt_airport/en/checkin_lu
ggage/hand_luggage/faqs1.html

So, the policy is very clear. Can you let me know if you will make this
clear to your staff, and also display notices to that effect?

Best wishes,

David

Hello Mr. Horne,

Firstly thank you for your valued patronage of Delhi duty Free. We have
received your mail and we regret the ordeal that you've gone through. As
a policy we always encourage our customers to check for themselves the
destination port customers allowances/rules and to ensure that their
purchases are in compliance.

However you have shared the bill receipt, we would request you to also
share the scanned copy of confiscation receipt to investigate your case

I would challenge you to do it on most of the connections I've had

This is a major reason I don't look at the Viking river cruises. They
require payment for all excursions in advance and after several e-mail
exchanges I got them pinned down to admit these are hiking groups. European
cruise lines let you book individual excusions, which lets be stick to the
ones with wheels. I can walk well enough to enjoy a museum, but getting
there can be too much.

I agree.

when looked at against the total costs the savings are tiny.

Unless you are driving over a local border to bring back crates of
beer/wine, all that you can save on bringing back the odd bottle of spirits
is 10 dollars or so. You can save five times that not checking an extra bag

I don't know about that. Personally I don't understand why you can't
take on duty free goods unless they are from the airport where you are
boarding, but I suppose someone can make a good argument concerning why
it is okay to take a duty free flammable liquid from that airport's duty
free store but not from one at another airport.

The last time I was in Europe was four years ago. I was flying from
Copenhagen to Toronto with a connection at Schipol. I guess I got
confused at Schipol because I ended up walking right out the front door.
We had to go through security to board for the Toronto leg of the journey.

Not for much longer at CDG, however (if you're changing from one Air
France flight to another). Already you can get from 2F (national) to 2E
(international) without going through security. The last time I did it
it worked in that direction, but not in the other. However, they're
working on it, and some time later this year it will be possible from
2E to 2F. 2E seems to be mainly flights to the Far East and South
America. I'm not sure where the AF flights to the USA go from (I try to
avoid CDG for them, as Amsterdam is usually nicer)..

One time when I was in Paris we arranged for a tour that included a boat
ride and a tour by van for the five of us. Our tour guide on the boat
gave her spiel in French, English, German, Spanish and Italian. Her
English was excellent. The van driver spoke excellent English, and he
was a good driver. He felt quite safe and enjoyed the tour.

In my case, I had a small rucksack as hand luggage that I could spare. I
wrapped the bottle in a newspaper, walked out of security to the
departure level, checked the rucksack in as checked baggage, and walked
back through security. I had no idea if it would work, but better than
not trying.
Why duty-free? Well, where else can you buy a bottle of Mauritius rum?

Just got back. 7 hours out of sync. Weather north of the Arctic circle was
a lot better for photography than further south, if pretty chilly 8-). It
started to snow as we got closer to Bergen and rained there, but it was
lovely and sunny in Copenhagen 8-)

It rained in Bergen? I'm shocked.

Fantastic day yesterday in the Peak District, unusual for a bank
holiday. It can rain the rest of the week now, as far as I'm concerned!

I had been to Denmark a couple times in early May and had wanted to go
back a little later in spring /summer to see it when it was a little
more lush. The last time we were there was in late June, after spending
the week leading up to Midsummer in Sweden. The weather was a major
disappointment. We arrived in time for a cold snap. The weather was
worse in late June than it had been in early May.
And forget about sleeping with the sun staying up 23-1/2 hours a day.

I came back to an almost summery day in the Chicago area, but the forecast
isn't so good over in Michigan for the next few days, and that's where I
head today.

Exactly what I was told there 8-). Apparently I was lucky that it thinned
out to heavily damp for a while in the afternoon I wanted to take some
fotos of it!

I wish. We had arrived at our niece's place in Tallinn around June 10.
The walls in the guest room were white and there were lace half curtains
on the big window. It got a little darker for about 5 minutes
after midnight but the sun was bright by 1:30 am. In Sweden we stayed at
a friend's summer house. Again... white walls and large windows, and
only partly covered by drapes. We spend Midsummer there and I remember
that the sun dropped below the horizon for a few minutes around 12:30
am. By 2 am there was blazing sunlight. Then we went to Copenhagen.
Being about 250 miles further south there was a slight difference in the
length of the day. Our hotel room had smaller windows and darker
curtains. After two weeks of almost no sleep and perhaps adjusting to
what had been a sudden change, we managed to get some sleep there.

There's a lot to be recommended about the felt eye-shields available in
catalogs from various travel need companies! I never needed them in my
travels, but my East-facing bedroom here in Arizona has vertical blinds
which the cats manage to disarrange every night. (True, we DO get a
reasonable number of hours of darkness, but I'm not a big fan of early
rising, and sunrise this time of year is around 6:15 A.M.)

It's years since I've been given a sleep mask on a long haul flight.

I have never been given a sleep mask on a flight, regardless of the time
of the flight.
It never occurred to me that I might need one. I had never been that far
north before.

Even the Netherlands is considerably further north that most of the US.
It is quite a bit further north than the most populous parts of Canada.
Stockholm is about the same latitude as the northern borders of the
prairie provinces. Here in southern Ontario, sunset on the summer
solstice is a few minutes after 9 pm. while int he Netherlands it will
be an hour later.

I believe British Airways gives us sleep masks for flights from San
Francisco (and now Phoenix) to London.

We usually fly in late May or June. It's an overnight flight following
a great circle path. The flight departs in early evening and as you
fly toward the northeast the sun is off the left wing (I try to get
seats n the right side). As you fly over Canada and approach Greenland
the sun remains off the left wing. It never ctually sets and as you
fly from Greenland down to England the sun remains off the left wing.
But when you land in the morning there it's the next day.

As my dog will be pointing ere long, it will get light before I'll be ready
to get up. Wisconsin days get pretty long in summer.

On June evenings, yes, of course. But during the flight the sun stays
pretty much off the left wing so as the flight progresses the sun
"moves" to due north and then on the leg to London to the northeast.

So also when I lived in Montreal, which isn't really as far north as
one might think, and when I lived in Richland, Washington, which is
further north than one might think. But a lot depends on where you are
in that time zone and whether daylight time is in effect. (which I
reckon it is almost everywhere except here in Arizona and a few other
places).

At my northern hemisphere location the sun set half an hour ago at
317 degrees. West is 270, north-west 315.
