We are considering visiting England during the last two weeks of
December. Can anyone provide suggestions regarding special events,
programs, etc., of interest during the Christmas season? For example, we
would like to attend one of the Christmas music services (such as that
recorded in the video "Carols from Kings" recorded at King's College,
Cambridge). Are there websites that would have the times, locations,
etc., of these programs? And, are reservations necessary?

We would appreciate any information or suggestions regarding travel
during this period.

Thanks,
Jim

We were there in December 2000 and found the University in Cambridge pretty
much shut down for the holiday season. Even King's College Chapel was closed
throughout our visit. Maybe you will be luckier.

We did, however, find plenty to do and see. We attended holiday concerts in
Gloucester and Birmingham as well as the theatre in London.

Term doesn't end for Cambridge until 19 December, so if you visit
before then you should be able to see all you want to see. If there
are other university-related things you want to do while you're here,
perhaps it's best to check each university's web site to see when term
ends.

Bath has a Christmas market - I've never been to it, but I do find
Bath a very pretty town:

And for ideas around London you can check out the Evening Standard's
London guide:

For the famous Christmas Eve Nine Lessons and Carols service at King's,
look here:
http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/chapel/ninelessons/

I can report from experience that they are not kidding about the need to
start queueing before 10.30am in order to get into the 3pm service!

However, all the Anglican cathedrals (and some of the bigger non-cathedral
churches too) will have similar services around Christmas, so unless you
are fanatical about King's in particular or are going to be in Cambridge
anyway, the trouble may be disproportionate to the experience.

Most of the cathedrals are pretty good these days about putting music
details on their websites. You'll find useful links here:

The services at Kings are primarily intended for the local community,
there are a few vacancies for those who queue but its guaranteed
you'll get in.

Still Cambridge is a wonderful place to visit

Its worth recalling that some of the most magnificent of those
cathedrals arent on the main tourist circuit.

I strongly recommend Durham, not only is the cathedral magnificent
but the choir and associated Durham Cathedral Consort of Singers are
outstanding.

There's a "not" missing from that sentence, Keith.

An earlier poster suggested that there would be services at King's before
Christmas. In fact neither King's nor St John's has services after the end
of the university term except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at King's.

See the thread "London on christmas day" for reasons why England may not
be the best place to visit at Christmas (unless you have family to
visit). For a festive atmosphere, I recommend Vienna or other areas of
Austria and Germany.

The King's College service will require you to queue to have a chance
of admission. If you're wanting Choral worship, here are some
Christmas period services that might be of interest:

Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.
(December information not yet available.)
http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/cathedral/music/currentmusic.html
Christ Church Cathedral Choir site http://www.chchchoir.org/ shows:
Tuesday 23 December - 19:30 - Service of Nine Lessons
Wednesday 24 December - 15:00 - Carols

Temple Church London - 11:15am Choral Matins
http://www.templechurch.com/pages/church/services2.htm

St Paul's Cathedral London - 15:15 Evensong
http://www.stpaulscathedral.org.uk

Westminste Abbey London - services to be advised.

Cheers,

Jason.

There is indeed, thanks for pointing that out.

Keith, do you have a website that might describe and perhaps provide the
schedule for the performances at Durham?

Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions.
