Hi Everyone,
All the major legacy airlines except Northwest Air have matched the
$4-$52 roundtrip fare hike that United Airlines began Thursday night.
American, Delta, US Airways, and Continental matched the United
increase.

Get ready for more price increases as the year progresses. The airlines
are hemorrhaging because of the fuel prices. The number of discounted
seats per plane are being cut as are the advanced ticket purchase
discounted spots. My wife sells air space for an airline and some
people trying to book now for Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years have
already missed the discounts. I looked at a flight that I need to take
in October and all the V class (heaviest discount) seats are already
gone ... and it is in the middle of the week!
Now, all that said, don't let $50 keep you from taking a cruise! Most
people spend more than that in the bar! ;-)

We had the experience of taking the train back from Baltimore to
Newark several years ago after our Grandeur cruise (we were
booked on later flight and when we got to the airport they told
us it had already been cancelled due to predicted bad weather;
of course we should have just driven in the first place but they
offered us free air and I foolishly took it, another story).
They gave us Amtrak tickets and told us to take the shuttle to
the train station, which is only 5 minutes away. Once we got to
airport station, we took the Airtrain back to the station where
the hotel shuttles stopped (our car was there).
The train was interesting (and certainly more comfortable than
flying), but having to do it with 2 pieces of luggage per person
was a real PITA.

My husband already refuses to fly anywhere. So if we can't drive to

When there are problems with the economy, slowdown, recession,
inflation etc. many people are going to suffer. Some are no longer
going to be able to cruise for various reasons related to the economic
problems.
Last time the cruise lines had to drop prices to fill the ships and
many including myself were able to take advantage of that. That could
be repeated but maybe not, because with the higher fuel costs they
might instead mothball or send to the breakers older less efficient
ships to reduce berths.

When I was arranging to get from where we are to Philadelphia to
embark on a cruise, I investigated all various modes of travel - bus,
train, air and rental car.
The bus was the cheapest, but the least convenient. We would have had
to drive to the bus station and there's no long term parking
available, and not much transportation available to or from bus
stations. The train was no easier to get to than the bus, and not
quite as cheap, but from experience would be more comfortable and
actually easier to deal with luggage than the bus. But we'd still
have to pay for a cabs and we'd still have to figure out how to park
our car.
The plane was the quickest and the most expensive. But the quickness
was offset by the time you spend in the airport - driving to the
airport, checking in, waiting, flying, retrieving luggage, and taxi to
terminal. It only takes about 2 hours to drive from Baltimore to
Philadelphia, and if you figure in all the dead time in the airports,
the plane actually takes just as long if not longer.
The best option for us has almost always been to rent a car. A one
day rental is not usually more than about $25.00. Also we can pick up
a rental car right near where we live and don't have to drive 60+
miles to D.C. or 100 miles to Baltimore to get to the station or
airport. We don't have to pay for parking while we are gone or worry
about the battery being dead or the car being vandalized in the
parking lot at the airport. When we get back, we just rent a car to
get home again.
I did take the train from BWI to Newark when I was flying to Ireland
from EWR (I was actually going to Princeton to stay with my sister a
couple of days and she was taking me to the airport), and that
particular part of the US has pretty good trains. They aren't that
expensive and they run frequently and are pretty much on time as long
as you take one that originates fairly close to where you get on.
We had two pieces of luggage each, and my grandson had his violin in
addition. He managed the luggage without a problem on the way up. On
the way home, we had trouble getting seats so it was a little more
hassle, but he was able to deal with it OK.
One problem with the trains is that they get farther and farther
behind schedule the longer the route is. So if you try to take a
train to Florida (for instance) the train can be several hours - maybe
half a day late when it gets there.
So if we were leaving from Boston, NY, Philadelphia, Baltimore,
Norfolk or Charleston, we would drive and do it in one day (although
for Boston NY or Charleston, we'd drive in the day before). I would
even prefer a one way rental if we were leaving from Florida - that is
not expensive in the winter. It is possible to drive from Baltimore
to Miami with just one overnight stop (my daughter and husband have
done it), but if I were doing that, I would take several days to make
the trip.
After 9/11... cruise sales went in the tank. The cruise lines, faced with
empty berths, lowered fares drastically. I remember selling 7 night cruises
for $290. Funny how people who were too afraid to travel because of
terrorists suddenly found new courage when the cost of cruising went way
down.
The lower prices introduced a lot of new people to cruising who would have
never thought they could afford it. Most of these people returned for other
cruises as the years went on and helped bring the cruise industry to the
stronger economic condition that it is in now.
So airfares went up $50. What hasn't? If you spend $1000 or $2000 on a
cruise, how many people are going to let another $50 change their mind? I
am sure there will be some, but not many. For example - when the cruise
lines announced their fuel surcharge, not a single one of my customers
cancelled a cruise. I am sure that someone did somewhere, but the number of
people who cancelled because of this fuel surcharge was minimal if not
infinitessimal.
YMMV

Technically it isn't. It is a self-governing commonwealth in
association with the US. There are some really important differences
that a friend of mine with the State Department tried to explain to me
one day over drinks. He wasn't successful (g).
Anybody live in the Keys or some of the beach communities north of Ft.
Lauderdale or Miami. I was wondering about the possibility of getting
to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami cruise ports via motor boat? Would it be
economical? What about comfort and speed? I'm not thinking of barely
sea worthy put-putt boats, but something larger like maybe a high speed
or high speed cat. Security is a wee bit too tight around the QM2, for
example, otherwise the high speed ferry from Jersey City would be
ideal. (for NYC Harbor that is.)

Are the airfares locked when booked? Or, can the airline adjust the rates
if fuel prices increase? We just booked on AA.com for a flight to SJU,
and the confirmation noted that some ticket fares might be subject to
change, without further elaboration??

It is a gray area. The "air fare" can not increase but somewhere in the
Contract of Passage is probably a disclaimer that increases in taxes, fuel
and facility costs can be passed along to the consumer.
If she did not work then her husband worked. Otherwise she would not
get Social Security income. Someone payed in for her to get Social
Security income. Either her, her husband or both. The amount one gets
is based on earnings. Your husband gets Social Security too right? If
you survive him then your amount will go up.

What is not kosher is something in your story. To get Social Security
she or a spouse would have to pay into the system from earnings. Social
Security is not welfare.

Hi Sheree,
If her husband died, she would get the amount that he received from what
earnings he had made and contributed to. If both worked, she would get the
highest amount that was earned...hers or her husband's but not both.
In other words if her husband got $1100. social security and she got $500.
social security or did not work at all, she would get $1100. when he died.
Social security is based on not only the amount of years of employment but
the amount earned while working. The higher the salary, the more is taken
out for social security, thus a larger social security entitlement. At least
that was the way it was explained to us when we retired.

How Social Security benefits are figured is off topic but suffice to

averaged over your working lifetime.
