New Year's Eve

We have never been on any cruise ship over New Year's Eve but will be on the
Norwegian Spirit Dec. 27-Jan.3rd...so I am wondering how they celebrate that
night...especially since NCL touts Freestyle Cruising.

Hi Helen,
Could you tell me a bit more...such as was there a formal night that night
since they have Freestyle Cruising?.Did you see many people dressed formally
that night? I know on other NCL cruises, they had one dining room for casual
and the other for those who wanted to go formal. Anything you might add
would be much appreciated.

We have also been on various NCL ships for New Year's Eve, including
the SPIRIT. They usually let you make reservations for the dining
venue of your choice and the time that you want early--even as early
as the first day of the voyage, since they know that night will be
special, and people may want to select their dining options without
having to wait until the last minute. You can also reserve a bottle
(or more) of champagne for yourselves that evening--it will be
delivered to your cabin in an ice bucket with glasses before dinner.
The ship is always beautifully decorated, and many folks dress
up--including us!! Funny hats, noise-makers and other festive items
are available in the various dining rooms, bars and lounges--just help
yourself!! The entire ship's company (including officers) gathers on
the top deck around the pool--free champagne for midnight having been
put into ice packed whirl-pools earlier in the day. At mid-night,
they do a count down and the ship's whistle announces the final 10
seconds, often preceeded by a greeting from the vessel "herself"
(announced by the Master), wishing everyone a joyous New Year. We
have ben very impressed in the past that the Master's greeting often
includes notes on the age of the ship and how far she has "steamed"
during the past year, and since her construction!! Midnight is a hoot,
with officers, crew, staff and passengers all celebrating together
around the upper decks. Don't panic--NCL Officers are not allowed to
drink while they are on board at any time, so they get ginger ale in
champagne flutes!! The main party continues in the forward lounge,
although other lounges offer a variety of music to select from and
dancing. They pass around the free champagne and assorted canapes for
about 20-30 minutes after midnight in the various lounges and bars.
On the SPIRIT, we had our special dinner in Cagney's, and then went to
Harry's to enjoy the music with some on-board friends. Harry's is a
smaller bar and we like the relaxing music played by the on-board
pianist or guitarist in comfortable surroundings without the crowds of
people. We went up to the pool area for the festivities at midnight,
then grabbed our bottle of (better) champagne from the cabin before
coming back to Harry's for more music and drinks.All of our officer
and crew friends were circulating around the ship, and we got a chance
to see virtually all of them to exchange New Year's wishes. It was a
fabulous occasion--and highly memorable!!

We were on the Norwegian Wind for a New Year's Eve cruise. I'm not exactly
sure what the festivities were for New Year's Eve. We spent the day in
Cancun. It was about 105 degrees in the shade. Went swimming, had some
drinks on the beach.... etc. By the time we tendered back to the ship and
had dinner, we were toast. Everyone else went off to the cabin for the
night. We were seriously zonked. I decided to try to stay up... but some
time late evening I wandered out back on an aft upper deck, and found a
lounge chair. Of course I fell asleep. Next thing I knew, they honked the
ship's horn at midnight... it scared the hell out of me... I was so tired, I
just ran back to the cabin to join everyone else in bed. So much for New
Years Eve on a cruise.
If you do New Year's Eve, you almost need to do at the end of a day at sea.

libation, only one day on the beach in Cancun. I think you made the right
decision and your sea day suggestion is on the mark, if available.

We will happen to leave Belize on New Year's Eve, Tom...I can see why you
were zonked out after a 105 degree day.
At least the ship's horn let you know the New Year was in! ;-) By midnight,
we usually call it a day unless I'm in the casino but I think an afternoon
nap may be helpful in order for us to stay up and welcome in the New Year!
The next port is Cozumel.
