We have seen numerous excellent reviews for Phnom Penh restaurant, and the
menu for Kettle of Fish (from the Net) looks good. Has anyone an opinion on
these restaurants or other recommendations?
We are from the San Francisco area and are looking for an informal setting,
and for something different from the cruise cuisine we'll be experiencing.
Thanks for your advice!

Sun Wong Kee, 4136 Main, is a small storefront Chinese restaurant that doesn't
look like anything special, but we had one of the best Chinese meals we've ever
had anywhere there; lobster in cream sauce with a Chinese equivalent of angel
hair pasta was magnificent.
Howard Rosenthal
sausi's on west broadway at about stephen's is a personal favorite. i
have been there at least once a month since it first opened [under the
name paradiso] about six years ago. never disappointed. always yummy and
great prices too. check it out and see a bit of non-downtown vancouver.
it is a $10 cab ride or $1.50 by bus #10 on granville street.
My personal opinion is that on the high-end, Vancouver isn't quite at
the level of San Francisco, but is still quite good. Vancouver's
price/performance, though, is unbeatable. For ethnic, Vancouver
loses big time on Mexican, probably comparable on Chinese, probably
wins on Greek, probably wins on Middle Eastern (I'm not knowledgeable
about these cuisines, so I've lumped them together in my mind), probably
wins on Indian, maybe loses on Italian? etc. YMMV
All of the restaurants others have recommended that I've been to I've
really enjoyed.

Ditto. I went to Salmon House (on the Hill) in West Vancouver with my
brother after going hiking -- didn't bother them at all. Speaking of
which, if you're willing to travel a bit, Salmon House (Folkstone Way
in West Vancouver) has great Salmon (of course) and a great view.
I also had a great scallop salad, but the other stuff that evening was
very good, but not great.

Personally, I lump Kettle of Fish in with the Fish House in an
equivalence class. The best fish I've had has been in random
Chinese restaurants, but that's a totally different style of preparation.
>French: Le Crocodile, Hermitage, Cafe de Paris
I've heard absolute rave reviews for Le Crocodile, but haven't made it
there yet.
I don't get downtown much, so my own favorites are probably too far
afield (and too casual) for an out-of-town visitor. Nearer to downtown,
you might try Raintree, which is in Gastown -- I've always had great
meals there. This is "West Coast" or "Northwest" cuisine, depending on
whether you're Canadian or American. :-) (Think California Cuisine
with more Salmon, more Asian influences, less Latin American influences. :-))
If you're willing to travel a bit for good Chinese food, I've had great
meals at Gar Lok at Granville and 41st and Sun Sui Wah at Main and 23rd or so.
I'm sure there are others (and better and closer), but these are just a
few that pop into my mind right now. For something a bit different,
Bo Kong on Main and 12th or so is completely vegetarian Chinese food
(all the "meat" dishes are done with glutton, soy, and stuff like that).
It was substantially better than the last similar restaurant I tried in
San Francisco (long ago, somewhere in the Richmond district).
Hope this helps.

Vancouver is as good an eating city as San Francisco with perhaps even
more choice of "ethnic" fare. You have a difficult choice to make if
only spending one night. The city is very casual so don't worry about
being underdressed.
If it is Fish you want, try "C" , The Fish House in Stanley Park, Joe
Fortes.
For a view with consistently good food try Seasons in The Park, The
Teahouse in Stanley Park,
Italian: Villa del Luppo, Quattro, Piccolo Mondo, Cafe Medici
French: Le Crocodile, Hermitage, Cafe de Paris
These are only a few of the hundreds of great restaurants in the
city---Kettle of Fish is not one of the best.

Vij's is a fusion East Indian cuisine that we get lots of rave
comments from our guests. It is on 11th Ave just east of Granville
Ave. We have a couple that arrange their flight schedules around their
Vij's dinner reservations once every two months.
Moustache Cafe is a personal favourite: Mediterranean cuisine prepared
and served by real foodies. The Sommelier is outstanding. One of the
few places that consistently meets and exceeds expectations.
At 6th & Burrard. 5 minutes from downtown.
For excellent sushi (where chefs go after they are off duty) you may
wish to try Shiro's. Unpresuming room - you could be in Tokyo 15th and
Cambie.
Apart from key times (Fri and Sat evenings between 6:30 and 9:00 pm)
you probably do not need to have reservations at most restaurants.
Hope this helps!
