People taking this cruise with a port stop in Bar Harbor, Maine; are in
for a real treat. You will be tendered in to the dock.
You will climb a small hill into town. Halfway up the hill are usually
two busses that will take you on a tour of the island.
One is a Park bus, but the other is Ollies Trolley....a fun bus. The
first thing you should think of when you arrive in town is a A
FRESH-LIVE MAINE LOBSTER. You may think you have tasted a real Maine
lobster back home or on the ship....well they are usually frozen and
completely lose their taste afterwards. Incidentally, you can also go to
a Lobster Bake in town. Just be sure you get around a 2lb. Lobster. You
may even have a choice of a soft shell or hard shell lobster...soft
shell is sweeter. Either way, I guarantee that you have never ever
really tasted a Maine Lobster until then. After you climb the hill you
will be in te center of town. The first street to the right is Cottage
Street. Go down to the super market. Nest to the market is JORDANS
restaurant, where the Bluebery pancake originated. a real treat. My next
recomendation is to see if you can arrange a trip to JORDANS POND up in
the mountains to enjoy their famous POPOVERS AND TEA PLUS THEIR LOBSTER
BISQUE.....this is to die for.Lastly, be sure to visit the BIRDSNEST
GALLERY IN THE VILLAGE SQUARE and look over the watercolor paintings of
Maine done by the friendly artist you have all come to know....Peter
Bugda
Peter....I am sure other Maine lovers will add a few items of
interest.

If you cant' get out to Jordan's Pond (In Acadia), Bar Harbor Inn (the big
place right where you'll land) has wonderful lobster bisque as well. If
you're looking more for a casual pub-style meal, try Geddy's right across
from Bar Harbor Inn. Also, the walking trails along the coastline right in
Bar Harbor are great, especially if you don't have time to get to Acadia.
If you do go to Acadia, try to visit "ThunderHole", which is a natural
formation of rock that makes a thundering noise when the water crashes
through it. It's best at high tide.

If you go to Portland, a walk around the Old Port is definitely required.
Cobblestone streets, locally owned shops, and little cafes! The Public
Market is on the other side of Congress Street, so it can be easy to miss,
but it's a real treat. Lots of Maine-made merchandise, locally grown foods,
and fresh fish!

Going on the NCL Sea Aug 11 on their Can/NE cruise. Have been reading
that Acadia Nat'l Park has a bus system called the Island Explorer or
something like that; if we want to use this bus system can we reach it
by walking from the pier or do we need to find other transportation to
get us to the nearest bus stop? Can you transfer from one bus route
to another inside the park?

Has anyone been to the mansions of Newport from the Newport cruise
pier? The ship offers a few mansion tours but we're not sure we want
to take the ship's tour; is there any easy, economical way to get from
the pier to the mansion district? Understand that there are many
mansions; don't want to tour all of them, maybe just a few, including
Breakers. Any suggestions?

>The Breakers is a must!! I also recommend the Marble House and Rose Cliff. If
you have just a day, one or two mansions is about all you can see. There are
many tours offered near the dock at Newport. We took a trolly tour of the whole
town, and it was great. There is a visitors information center near the place
where you tender in, and all kinds of tours can be gotten there. Ejnoy! We are
doing the brilliance of the Seas oct 12, but no Newport:( We did Newport last
Oct on the QE2. I also live only about 70 miles from Newport, so I can visit
often, It is a great place!

Regal Empress takes lobster aboard when they are in Maine and serve them for
dinner.... but the REALLY great treat is taking a Maine Windjammer... they
generally have a lobster boil ashore one evening... imagine having all you
can eat lobster... I don't think my sons will ever forget that meal!
